Reading Group B, Term 2


During Term 2, Reading Group B will: Learn about factual texts their purpose, their features, how to read them and how to use them. Read Bookweb reading books in modelled, guided and independent sessions and complete related Blooms Taxonomy and literature circle activities. Independently complete comprehension activities. Explanation and Rationale: Reading Groups have been programmed to provide students with a balanced literacy program and are differentiated to cater for the wide range of ability levels within Reading Group B (middle ability group in Year 3). Reading Groups are scheduled every Monday (11:20-12:20), Tuesday (11:20-12:20) and Wednesday (11:20-12:05). During this time, students participate in guided and independent reading activities. Each reading session is aimed at building reading skills based on the four roles of the reader, outlined below: (http://www.myread.org/what.htm, 2002):

Whole Class Learning Experiences: Using Factual Texts


Whole class sessions run once a week in conjunction with the reading and comprehension program. Week Topic Learning Experience 1 Using The class revise features of factual texts; language, contents page, index. They discuss efficient ways of finding information using contents, index factual texts and scanning skills In small groups, students use the contents page, index and scanning skills to find and record 3 interesting facts about The solar system The class feedback information 2 Using factual texts The class revise features of factual texts; language, contents page, index. Teacher models how to locate imprint details and class discusses why it is important to know publishing details of factual texts. Teacher models using a Contents page. Students work in pairs to: a. Select a book about space and use the Contents page to choose an interesting topic to read about. b. Select a passage with interesting factual information and discuss key points with partner. c. Record the interesting fact/s into Reading Groups book IN OWN WORDS.

Publishing details

Class discuss publishing details. Teacher introduces discussion points: why do books have imprints? Why would it be important to know the publishing details of a factual text? What do they tell us? Students brainstorm and discuss answers. They then look at science books and search for interesting facts. They: Record page number, book title and imprint details underneath interesting fact. Students share interesting facts in a circle on the floor and talk about when the information was published and whether it might be different now.

Teacher relates website information to imprint details on a book. Students jointly read a factual text on Space on BBC for Kids website. Students identify features that make it a factual texts. Class discussion explores how factual texts on websites are different to factual books brainstorm what is the same and what is different? Students read a factual text online and complete questionnaire in Reading Groups book.
