The increasing pace of habitat destruction and fragmentation, and the rise in international wildlife trade in the last 50 years threatens the survival of wildlife and hence our own survival. Intemational cooperation to halt the decline of wildlife is imper- ative, but so is domestic action. In this chapter, I examine the legal and administrative framework in Singapore for protecting and safeguarding the survival and welfare of wildlife and its habitats from human activi- ties. Where appropriate, [also consider how the principles of sustainable development have or have not been implemented to achieve the object of saving wildlife and its habitat. Il, The "Gartlen City”: Green but Not Ecological Singapore is a city-state with a population of 4.3 million and one of the highest standards of living in Asia. With only about 699 kav of land and cone of the highest population densities in the world,’ the pressure to develop land to meet all manner of socioeconomic needs is enormous.
