Here are just a few examples. Conference on Rural Justice — Last month the state court system organized a conference entitled “A Conversation About Justice Initiatives in Rural New York: Planting the Seeds for Collaborations and Partnerships.” I attended as President of our Bar Association. Others in attendance from Oneida County included: Hon. John S. Balzano, Utica City Court Judge; Michael E. Getnick, Esq., Secretary of the New York State Bar Association; Robert B. Salzman, Esq., Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of Mid-York, Inc.; and Cindy Hendrickson, Esq., Managing Attomey for the Legal Aid Society of Mid-York, Ine. Attendees from around the state represented the bar, the courts (including town cours), local government and advocacy organizations. We participated in a series of panel discussions for which the ultimate focus was how to improve access to the justice system in rural areas of New York State. Although the conference was simply an opening conversation about a very complex topic, locally a meeting has since been held to include representatives of the Utica office of the Legal Aid Society, the Board of Directors of the Bar Association and the Family and Domestic Relations Committee of the Bar Association. At the meeting, we brainstormed ways to expand the delivery of legal services to the poor that would include both members of the private bar and the Legal Aid office, without relying exclusively ‘on pro bono work. CLE Seminars ~ For the past two months, CLE seminars have been held almost weekly through the work of our CLE committee. Presentations have included local and “imported” speakers. For less than the cost of one seminar offered by commercial companies, attorneys can obtain all of the required CLE credits without having to leave Oneida County. For every hour offered through seminar, it takes many more hours in planning and preparation. Soon a survey will be circulated among the members! gather your input about the CLE program. Nominating Committee ~ Peter M. Hobaica, Esq. was appointed chair of this year’s Nominating Committee for the purpose of proposing a slate of officers and November 2007 directors for 2008. Serving on the committee were Leighton R. Burns, Esq., William P. Schmitt, Esq., Gail N. Uebelhoer, Esq. and Jay G. Williams, II, Esq. ‘The Annual Meeting of the Membership will be held December 7, 2007 at the Oneida County Courthouse in Utica, Please plan to attend this brief, but important, meeting to vote for the future of the Bar Association. Program Committee ~ The “Holidays Party” has been planned for December 6, 2007 at the Fort Schuyler Club in Utica. This informal affair is designed to celebrate all of the holidays of the season, say a fond farewell to 2007 and weleome the opportunities that accompany the start of a new year. There is no planned program — just a delicious menu and relaxed conversation with colleagues, Whether you can stop for a few minutes or a few hours, this event is worth attending. Thanks to the Program Committee and its chair, Lawrence W. Golden, for their work in organizing this party. And believe it or not ~ but these items are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of time devoted by attorneys, committee chairs and committee members toward the work of the Bar Association. Next month you will be receiving your dues statement for 2008. As you consider renewing your membership, please consider that the Bar Associ n is not just about the bene we each receive individually, but also includes benefits for the whole of our profession Best Wishes to all this Thanksgiving season, = Julie Grow Denton, Esq. It is an honor to announce that Michael E. Getnick, Esq. has received the endorsement of the Nominating Committee to serve as President-Elect of the New York State Bar Association. If elected to this position on February 1, 2008, he would serve as President in 2009. Mr. Getnick currently serves as Secretary of the State Bar Association. For an attorney from Oneida County to attain the position of President is anoteworthy accomplishment, We wish Mr. Getnick well and look forward to his year in office.
