Introduction to Jazz Improvisation Worksheets - B instruments


The Finale Jazz Improvisation Worksheets take a step-by-step approach to learning to improvise. Each worksheet contains a short piece written in a common jazz style. Each piece is repeated four times. Open the file in any of the MakeMusic family of notation products; by pressing the play button in the Playback Controls, you can practice playing each step with a rhythm section. Each piece is repeated four times. This introductory worksheet works through the first piece of the series, giving completed examples for each section.

Chocolate Milk
1. The first step is to become familiar with the melody. Practice playing the melody with the accompaniment.

2. The second step is to become familiar with the jazz patterns for each of the chords. The jazz patterns contain chord tones and passing tones for each chord chord used in the piece. These wll be useful in creating your own improvisations. Practice playing the patterns with the accompaniment.

3. The third step is to create your own embellished melody. Use the basic melody as an outline. Embellish or vary the melody by using the notes from the jazz patterns. Remember that you may vary the notes and the rhythm. Compare the example below with the original melody. Practice it with the accompaniment. Circle the notes which were used in the melody.

4. In step four, you will use the notes from the original melody and the jazz pattern to compose your own original melody. In the example below, notice how the notes used for each chord or measure reflect those used in the melody and jazz patterns. Practice the new melody with the accompaniment.

5. Next, embellish your new melody. Follow the same process used in step 3. Use the new melody as an outline and vary it with the notes from the jazz patterns. Compare the example below with the new melody. Practice it with the accompaniment. Circle the notes used in the new melody.

6. The last step is to practice improvising. Using the notes from the melodies and the jazz patterns, create your own improvisations while playing with the accompaniment. Don't be afraid to experiment with different notes and rhythms. Have fun!

Introduction to Jazz Improvisation Worksheets - E instruments


The Finale Jazz Improvisation Worksheets take a step-by-step approach to learning to improvise. Each worksheet contains a short piece written in a common jazz style. Each piece is repeated four times. Open the file in any of the MakeMusic family of notation products; by pressing the play button in the Playback Controls, you can practice playing each step with a rhythm section. Each piece is repeated four times. This introductory worksheet works through the first piece of the series, giving completed examples for each section.

1. The first step is to become familiar with the melody. Practice playing the melody with the accompaniment.

3. The third step is to create your own embellished melody. Use the basic melody as an outline. Embellish or vary the melody by using the notes from the jazz patterns.
