Averaged Circuit models for switching power converters are useful for analysis and simulation, and for obtaining engineering intuition into the operation of these switched circuits. This paper develops averaged circuit models for switching converters using a direct circuit averaging method. The method proceeds in a systematic fashion by determining appropriate averaged circuit elements that are consistent with the averaged circuit waveforms. The averaged circuit models that are obtained are syntheses of the state-space averaged models for the underlying switched circuits. An important feature of our method is that it is applicable to switched circuits whose non-switch elements may be nonlinear. Our approach is compared and contrasted with the results on averaged circuit models currently available in the literature.
