What is an Electric Bicycle? Introduction to Electric Bicycles

An electric bicycle is a bicycle that uses an electric motor to assist with its propulsion. Basically, it is like a normal bicycle with the addition of a battery pack and an electric motor. The battery pack can be recharged at any time by plugging it into any standard household receptacle. There are 3 different motor locations: front wheel, center, and rear wheel. The motor minimizes the burden of pedaling, making it easier to go up a hill or cycle into a headwind; and it helps the cyclist go further with less effort. Electric bicycles are divided into two categories: Ebikes and Pedelecs. An Ebike has a throttle mounted onto the handlebar which the cyclist can press to increase or release to adjust the amount of propulsion power from the drive system. During this mode there is no need to pedal. A Pedelec is a more advance bicycle, providing powered assistance only when the cyclist is pedaling, i.e. the cyclist cannot simply rely on the motor to ride around without any effort on their part. The Pedelec also has a lever mounted on the handlebar to set a desired level of electric assist. During this mode, the cyclist must pedal to maintain bicycle motion; the amount of assistance provided by the cyclist increases the amount of electric power provided by the motor. A torque sensor measures the cyclists input; the power needed to advance the bike forward is calculated and provides the correct motor power depending on the preset assist. The cyclist may choose to pedal faster than the motor's rated-top speed to help the bike up a hill or to extend the range of the battery. Some electric bikes allows the cyclist to select three different power modes: pedal only (like a regular bike), PEDELEC or pedal-assisted (the cyclist is pedaling but the motor is assisting) and EBIKE or motor only (the cyclist allows the bikes motor to do all the work). Typical travel speeds of ebikes and Pedelecs range from 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 km/h) depending on the regulations of the country in which they are sold. The US limits the power to 700 Watts and the speed to 20 mph.

Each bike is equipped with a battery to provide power to the propulsion system. Modern bikes utilize the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries. A typical Li-ion bike battery has 40 to 50 individual cells with a total a capacity of 10 to 17Ah @ 36 Volts. Below is a chart which shows the comparison of Li cells having different capacities. The re-charge time ranges from 2 to 8 hours. The life span of a Li battery is 500 to 800 cycles giving a usage of approximately 3 years.
