On inspiration with the safety valve & exhalation valve energized closed, gas goes to the patient.

On exhalation, with the safety valve energized closed, and the exhalation valve open to maintain PEEP, gas is exhaled to atmosphere via the exhalation dump port.

One-way checkvalves ensure that the patient will be able to inhale air through the open (deenergized) Safety Valve and exhale out through the open (deenergized) Exhalation Valve.
