Essential Skills and Knowledge Students will revise writing to add details. Lesson Objectives Students will use descriptive words to elaborate writing. Students will be able to identify the characteristics of a paper with strong details. Instructional Focus The lesson will provide students with strategies and vocabulary that will enable them to add details to their writing. Materials & Resources Overhead projector Venn diagram Sample papers (one with strong elaboration and one with weak elaboration) List of descriptive words List of Prepositional phrases Papers previously written by students to revise Procedures/Activities 1. Discuss the meaning of elaboration and give a real-world example 2. Take notes on how to elaborate (Cornell notetaking, Marzano strategy) 3. Compare and contrast two papers for the quality of elaboration. Give only one characteristic or example of how the papers are different. (Marzano strategy) Guided Practice 4. Students will continue to compare and contrast the papers in a Venn diagram with a partner. 5. As a whole group discuss their answers and complete the Venn diagram on the overhead. 6. Using the list of descriptive words, prepositions, and their notes they will discuss how to elaborate in the paper with poor elaboration. Model how to revise and or add a detail to the first paragraph. Independent Practice/Application 7. The students will use list of descriptive words, prepositions, and their notes to revise their own writing. Class Review 8. Discuss how to use a Memory Key when writing. Discuss the vocabulary section of the Key. Assessment: Final draft of their revised paper.
