Course Syllabus
Course Description: We will focus on the relationship that exists among physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health. Students will learn that their decisions affect each of those areas and will discover that the decisions they make can promote their health and enjoyment of life now and in the future. Students will also learn the benefits of a healthy body image as well as the dangers that overshadow low self-esteem. Major Themes to be Explored: Health and wellness, stress and stress management, body image, eating disorders Essential Questions to be Explored: o What is health? o What is wellness? o What is the difference between infectious and lifestyle disease? o What is the difference between quality and quantity of life? o How has life expectancy changed over the last 100 years? o What are the leading causes of death among adolescents? o How can I lead a longer, better life? o What are the 6 areas of wellness and what are their characteristics? o What is stress? o What is the difference between eustress and distress? o What are common stressors among young adults? o What does stress do to the body? o How does stress affect personality? o What are healthy ways to deal with stress? o What is the medias view on the perfect male/female body? o What is anorexia nervosa, what are the characteristics, and what are the health consequences associated with the disorder?

o What is bulimia nervosa, what are the characteristics, and what are the health consequences associated with the disorder? o How does anorexia and bulimia nervosa affect males? o What are some ways to improve your body image? Course Objectives: Students will practice and apply skills necessary to living a healthy lifestyle. They will apply their knowledge to their own lives to improve their wellbeing. Students will analyze media influences and learn to handle stress and self-esteem issues in a healthy manner. Classroom Expectations: Students will arrive to class on time Three late arrivals will result in an after school detention. Students will bring a notebook/binder/folder with them to every class. Each student is responsible for keeping information organized, but it is up to the individual student which method they would prefer to use. Students will complete any unfinished class work as homework. Students will adhere to all handbook guidelines. Behavior Expectations Students will compile a list of classroom rules and will abide by these rules. Infringement of classroom or handbook rules will result in disciplinary action. Grades: each unit will be weighed according to level of difficultly and time spent within each unit. At the end of the quarter, the amount of points awarded with will be divided by the amount of possible points. The percentage will follow the Grading Scale listed below. o Activities/Projects Student will complete in-class projects and activities that will value in point value Students will complete individual as well as group projects Groups will be given one grade Students will have the opportunity to score their group members to ensure each member is completing their share of the work

o Quizzes Students will be quizzed often. Quizzes may or may not be announced Students are encouraged to review previous lectures before coming to class to ensure optimal assessment grades o Exams There will be at least 1 exam per unit Exams will be announced at least a week prior to the test Students will be responsible for knowing information from lectures, labs, and videos

Health Analytic Rubric Grading Scale A 93-100% B 85-92% C 76-84% D 70-75% F 69-below% I Incomplete; work not completed within 5 days of the end of a marking period becomes an F.

Final Course Grade: Final course grades are based on student performance on summative assessments based on a weighing system.

Make-up Work: For every day a student is absent (five or fewer days), he or she will be allowed two days to make up missed work. Any student missing more than five days must request work to be sent home through the assistant principals office. In such an instance, time allotted for make-up work will be at the teachers discretion. If student is present when the assignment due date is given and that student is absent on the due date, the student is responsible for handing in the assignment on the next day they are present in class. All make-up work must be completed by the end of the semester. After compiling three unexcused absences, students may or may not be permitted to make up missed work Missed quizzes/tests: must be made up within one weeks time before school or after. It is the students responsibility to schedule the make up with the instructor.

Late Work: Work completed/submitted beyond the due date for make-up work will be subject to a 10% reduction (from the earned grade) for each day it remains incomplete/not submitted. After five days, the student will receive 0% and will no longer be permitted to submit the work. *The instructor holds the right to change any of the above information, but will inform students accordingly.
