RUNNING HEAD: REFLECTION PAPER Teach Like a Champion is a very intriguing and interesting book. The first

three chapters of this book have really made me take a look at my own teaching and determine which techniques I use already. Chapter one discussed how we should set our expectations high for our students. This is extremely important when trying to attain high academic performance. The techniques I use in my class now are Technique one and Technique 4. Technique one- NO OPT OUT- Turn I dont know into success by helping students who wont try or cant succeed practice getting it right (and become accountable for trying). This technique is key to helping students become more independent and explores the creative side of their brain. I do not accept I dont know in my classroom; the student has to give me an answer. I want each student to communicate in class. Technique four- FORMAT MATTERS- Help your students format responses to your questions grammatically, in complete sentences, audibly, and according to other worthy criteria. This technique is very important to me because I want students to use proper grammar in all classes, not just English. I do not accept paper or any assignments that are not in complete sentences. In chapter two the techniques that relate to me are techniques nine and ten. Technique nine- SHORTEST PATH- In planning lessons, find the most direct and effective route by which students can reach the goal. Many of my lessons are Direct Instruction and when I am writing my lessons for the week, I try to be as clear and concise as possible. I want all of my students to be able to understand the lesson and be able to remember and utilize the information in the future. Technique tenDOUBLE PLAN- As you plan a lesson, plan what students will be doing at each point

in class. In my classes I have a variety of all learners, some students work faster than others, so to keep the students engaged on independent practice, each part of the assignment is written in steps to provide students that finish early to move on to the next step. In chapter three the two techniques I use extremely are techniques 15 and 16. Technique 15- CIRCULATE- Move strategically around the room during all parts of the lesson. After I teach a lesson, I move throughout the classroom frequently helping students and try to give each student or group one-on-one attention. This is very beneficial for my students and I. It helps me understand who does not really understand the material and what I need to re-teach. It also gives the student an opportunity to get any questions answered and a better understanding of the material. Technique 16- BREAK IT DOWN- When a student makes an error, provide just enough help to allow her to solve as much of the original problem as she can. When solving a problem students need to realize their own mistakes so in the future they will not repeat it.
