Lesson Plan for Art Education Majors

Title: Bean and Seed Symmetrical Mosaic Grade 4 Description: Students will be learning about reflective and rotational symmetry. They will also learn about mosaics, how they are made, and what they could be used for. They will then create their own mosaic using an assortment of beans and seeds. They will choose out of five different kinds what they would like to use. They have to use at least four kinds in their mosaic. Their design of the mosaic will be either reflective or rotational symmetry. Behavioral Objectives/Essential Questions: What is a mosaic and what is the purpose of the art? What is the difference between rotational and reflected symmetry? Students will create their own symmetrical design mosaic using up to 4 different types of beans and seeds. Pennsylvania State Academic Standards: 9.1.5.A: Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. 9.1.5.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. 9.1.5.C: Know and use fundamental vocabulary within each of the arts forms. 9.2.5.A: Explain the historical, cultural and social context of an individual work in the arts. Modifications for Individual Differences: Gifted/talented students may create a symmetrical design using the rotational technique, which is more difficult than reflected symmetry. Students with special needs may use a larger or smaller piece of cardboard to fit their needs. They could also work with a partner if needed. Materials and/or Equipment: Promethean Board Paper Pencil Cardboard Assortment of beans and seeds (pinto beans, corn, peas, dried beans, etc.) Ziploc bags Elmers Glue Anticipatory Set: Introduce the lesson by explaining and showing examples of rotational and reflected symmetry. After, explain a mosaic and the purpose this type of art serves along with images. Student Work Time: Step 1: Students will begin by selecting which type of symmetry they would like to use. Step 2: Begin to sketch a design on a separate sheet of paper that displays the type of symmetry chosen. Step 3: When design is chosen, transfer to a piece of cardboard, cut by the teacher. Step 4: Choose up to 4 different types of beans/seeds, lay out on cardboard before gluing. Step 5: Begin to glue on the seeds/beans. Closure: When finished, students will be able to share their mosaics with each other and point out who used reflected or rotational symmetry. Grading the student: Are students able to explain what a mosaic is and the purpose? Can students identify the difference between a rotational and reflected symmetrical design? Did students create their own symmetrical design mosaic using up to 4 beans and seeds?
