John McWethy biography

For 25 years, John McWethy was ABC News National Security Correspondent before he retired in 2003. He now carries the title of "Special Correspondent" with ABC News...working on projects for the network, doing pieces on PBS, moderating table top terrorism exercises and teaching. As Special Correspondent, he did an hour Prime Time special on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, called Rumsfeld's Rules of War and a multi-part series for Nightline on post traumatic stress disorder among U.S. troops in Iraq. McWethy was in the Pentagon the day it was hit by a hijacked passenger plane on September 11th, 2001. He was the lead correspondent covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraqdoing more spots for World News Tonight than any other correspondent at the network during that period, plus appearing on Good Morning America, Nightline and many ABC Specials. He was the first television correspondent to embed with U.S. Special Forces during the war in Afghanistanspending time with a team in Tora Bora during the search for Osama bin Laden During his 25 years with ABC News, McWethy covered more than a dozen conflicts beginning with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. He traveled with Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker, covering the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Persian Gulf War. McWethy has filed reports from more than 50 countries including Somalia, Bosnia and Liberia during the depth of civil wars. In addition to traditional conflicts, McWethy has specialized in terrorism, intelligence and diplomacy. Prior to ABC News, McWethy spent seven years at U.S. News and World Report, first as its science and technology editor and then as Chief White House Correspondent. He had previously worked for Congressional Quarterly, covering defense and intelligence. He has won five Emmys, a DuPont, a Peabody and many other awards. He holds a Masters Degree from Columbia University's Pulitzer School of Journalism, a Bachelor's degree (and honorary doctorate) from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. Hes married and has two sons. ##
