Writing Workshop
What is it and how does it work?
Goals To become used to sitting down and writing on task for 30 minutes at a time.
This will help you complete future assignments more quickly.

To become an expert at writing in different styles, and understand the sometimes subtle differences between types of writing.
This will help you figure out where to begin on future assignments.

To be able to sell yourself in different contexts.

This will help you determine when different speaking and writing skills are appropriate throughout life.

Writing Days
NO regular journal You will often be given a do-now, but they will not be journals. Mini-lesson (5-10 minutes) I will present a topic for the day, and will give a few guidelines on what you will be writing. Writing (30 minutes) You will be given a prompt to write on (sometimes there will be several that Stream of Consciousness you may pick between). is You must be silent during writing time. You must write for the entire half hour. You do not finish this prompt. If you are not sure how to continue writing, you can write stream of consciousness until you think of something else on topic. Sharing (5 minutes) I will ask for volunteers to share what they wrote. You may give a summary or read from your paper. Self-Critique (5 minutes) Each workshop day will end in a self-evaluation. Please be honest with these; you are graded on effort and thoughtfulness, not content.

Editing Days
NO regular journal You will often be given a do-now, but they will not be journals. Mini-lesson (5-10 minutes)

I will present a topic for the day, and will give a few guidelines on what you will be writing. Peer Editing (15-30 minutes) At least of your classmates will read and give feedback on what you wrote, and you will do the same for them. If you finish editing with one person, trade with another. PLEASE write on papers you are editing, but use a different color writing utensil than it is written in. Dont forget to use compliment sandwiches. Revision (0-15 minutes) You may have up to fifteen minutes to begin your revisions, depending on the prompt and the assignment. Some weeks will be editing-only weeks, and you will do revision on your own time. Sharing (5 minutes) I will ask volunteers to share some useful critiques they received during editing. If you learned something you will change about your writing for the future, please share! Editing-Critique (5 minutes) Just as you do a self-critique on writing days, you will do an editing-critique on editing days. Please be honest with these; you are graded on effort and thoughtfulness, not content.

Remember
1.) NO TALKING DURING WRITING. 2.) WRITE FOR THE ENTIRE 30 MINUTES. 3.) Be genuine in your self-critique and editing critique. I am looking for thoughtfulness. If you say you did poorly in something that does not mean points will be taken off; sometimes admitting that you did not do well is a very difficult and thought-intensive thing to do. 4.) You may talk during editing, but only about the task at hand. Some quiet talking about the writing and editing is acceptable, but if this gets out of hand, or I hear you speaking off topic, you will some lose points for the day.

Grading
I will always collect work produced in Writing Workshop, though I may give you some out of class time to work on revision before doing so. It is in your best interest to do as much work as possible in class for the following reasons 1.) Being on task earns you more participation points. 2.) Finishing in class means you dont have homework. 3.) Even when you think you are done, there is always something that can be better. The better your work is, the better your grade is.
