Neutralisation

Prepared by: Cik Soh Pea Ling

1. Neutralisation is the chemical reaction which takes place when an acid and an alkali react with each other to form a salt and water only.
Acid + Alkali salt + water 2. Example of Neutralisation:
Hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide sodium chloride + water Hydrochloric acid + calcium hydroxide calcium chloride + water

Explain neutralisation in your own word State the word equation for neutralisation

Sulphuric acid + sodium hydroxide sodium sulphate + water

Applications of Neutralisation

2.
3.

4.

Tooth-paste Indigestion Calcium hydroxide used to reduce the acidity of the soil Sting by a beeformic acid into the skin --- ammonia solution applied neutralise the alkali

Aim: To investigate Neutralisation between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide

Materials: 0.5M hydrochloric acid, 0.5M sodium hydroxide, universal indicator

Apparatus: Burette, conical flask, pipette, retort stand and clamp, white tile.

Diagram: Burette Retort stand Hydrochloric acid

Sodium hydroxide + Universal indicator White tile

Observation:

Initial burette reading (cm3) Final burette reading (cm3) Volume of acid required for complete Neutralisation (cm3) Change in colour

35 25 Dark blue to red

Conclusion:

The sodium hydroxide solution is neutralised by dilute hydrochloric acid to form sodium chloride and water only.
Hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide sodium chloride + water
