Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Solving Quadratic Equations Graphically Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to use graphical methods to solve the roots of a quadratic equation. Most students should be able to use a linear function to solve a quadratic equation graphically. Some students should be able to derive and solve the resultant quadratic equation from linear and quadratic graphs. Keywords: Quadratic equations, Solve graphically, linear, function Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap solving linear equations simultaneously using graphical methods. For the third question students may need guidance with rearranging the RHS to match the function on the graph. Emphasise the need to solve for x and y since students typically only solve for x. This is a key learning point for the remainder of the lesson. Development Using the function demonstrate for the students how to derive the functions needed to solve each of the equations given. For example, , add four to each side for so therefore the line must also be drawn. The solution is where the two meet since both values are equal. With , add to each slide for so the line must be drawn. To maintain the pace of the lesson use the graph plotting software in the additional resources so time is not wasted plotting individual functions. Ideally, students will have graphical calculators to plot the resulting functions and sketch their graphs to highlight the intersection. Students should be able to work through the third slide independently. Use the Autograph files in the additional resources to feedback solutions. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate and extend the learning by having students derive and solve the resultant equation from the two functions. It may be necessary to work through the first problem with the class and have them attempt the second one in pairs or small groups. Use mini-whiteboards to assess progress and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could consider cubic or reciprocal functions. Solutions that are found graphically could be solved by completing the square to check for accuracy. Less Able Students may need to solve the roots of quadratics one lesson and move on to using linear functions in the next. Using integer solutions will ensure students clearly identify the solutions with little ambiguity. Resources: Mini-whiteboards Autograph V3.3 Files
