Vietnam-Era Weebly Assignment

What comes to mind when you think of the 1960s and 70s? Hippies? War protests? Music? The years 1965-1975 were a time of great social change and upheaval in America. They were also the years in which we were engaged in the Vietnam War. In order to better understand the cultural context of the novel The Things They Carried, you are going to create a website that explains various aspects of history and culture during this time. This is more than Wikipedia! You are going to use images, sound, and more to engage as many senses as possible and to recreate the experience of your topic for the website viewer.

The Steps
1. Research your chosen topic by browsing websites and looking through books (provided). 2. Gather factual information about your topic in the form of text 3. Gather artifacts in other modes that represent significant aspects of your topic e.g. videos, podcasts, songs, images, primary texts (letters, etc.) 4. Design a web page (Weebly) that presents your research in a cohesive, attractive, informative way.

The Criteria
Your website will be evaluated on the following criteria: 1. Overall design of web page (including banner images, font, color, and layout) contributes to viewers understanding of your topic 2. Web page cites and/or links to at least THREE (3) different sources 3. Sources include both text and non-text (video, image, audio recording, etc.) 4. Website shows evidence of thought and synthesis; rather than just copying and pasting, you have thought about, reorganized, and interpreted information from all of your sources to create a cohesive web page 5. Website utilizes all of the required modes (see below)

Required Modes
Your website MUST include ALL of the following components. 1. 2. 3. 4. Text (written by you and your partner; not copied and pasted) Images (in the form of a slideshow, with captions) Video (you will have access to YouTube) Audio clips (music, podcasts, a recording of your voice reading a primary document, etc.)

Optional Modes
You may also include maps, links to outside resources, and anything else that you feel will contribute to your viewers experience and understanding of your topic.

Topic Selection
Everyone will work with a partner for this assignment (one group of three). Please get together with your partner and discuss the options. Write BOTH of your names on this sheet. Number your choices in order of preference (1, 2, 3, 4). I will attempt to assign every group one of their choices. Names: __________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Music and Fashion _____ Political Protest _____ Selective Service / the Draft (including draft dodging) _____ Concurrent social movements (Black Panthers, Womens Lib, etc.) _____ Vietnam war tactics (Guerrilla warfare, Agent Orange, use of Special Forces, etc.) _____ The players: North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Viet Cong, America, France _____ History of the conflict (the role of France, the war before American engagement) _____ Post-War Experiences of Soldiers (PTSD) _____ The P.O.W. / M.I.A. issue (Prisoners of War and Missing in Action) _____ Weapons _____ Connections to the Cold War & Americas fear of Communism _____ Womens roles in the war _____ The aftermath lasting effects in Asia and in American culture
