Name____________________________ Date ____________

In groups we have read and reported on articles about different incidents of government control in todays world. Now your group will be researching and presenting a report on an incident of government control of society found in the world today. Choose one of the topics below. China and the Internet, media, press North Korea and control of the press or Internet Syria internet, cell phones Russian journalists and newspapers going extinct India reporters, social media controls Iran blocking challenging media, inside and out Uzbekistan censoring all independent media (not allowing it to exist) Libya and the government media blackout Or another that you can think of and research You will then research and take notes on your topic with the following focuses: What is being controlled in the society? (Internet access, news media, all broadcast media, music lyrics, etc) Who is exercising this control? (Church, government, etc.) Why are they exercising this control? (What do they gain? be specific) How does this control affect the society? (How are people reacting, what is happening, etc.)

Using your research, you will be putting together a media presentation in the think tank to give the class an idea of what is going on in our world today that is reflected in the literature we have read. At the end of the presentation you will also be reflecting on what you are taking away from this project, what surprised or interested you, what connections you made with other things, etc. This could be a written reflection, a video reflection or a voiceover/recorded reflection. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men the great difficulty lies in this: You must first enable the government to control the governed, and in the next place, oblige it to control itself -- Alexander Hamilton The Federalist Feb.8, 1788 "It is not the function of our Government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the Government from falling into error." -- Robert H. Jackson You who are journalists, writers, citizens, you have the right and duty to say to those you have elected that they must practice mindfulness, calm and deep listening, and loving speech. This is universal thing, taught by all religions. -- Thich Nhat Hanh
