Gym Lesson Plan- Cooperative Games Lesson 3 Grade: 2-3 Outcomes: Students will be able to understand the importance

of working cooperatively with each other through tossing to a moving target, chasing and fleeing. Doing: Students will be expected to select and perform locomotor and non locomotor skills (with and without objects) individually, and with a partner. Students will be expected to demonstrate ways to retain and move and object with control. Knowing: Students will be expected to explain how working with a partner or group may affect performance. Valuing: Students will be expected to explain the importance of listening to directions and staying on task. Equipment Needed: 10 foam balls Entry Activity- Warm up or Instant Activity- Pass N Sting (5 mins) The students will be waiting patiently at the door. Greet the students at the door and assigned a partner for the activity. Pass N Sting The basketball court will be the boundaries for the game. When students hear the word Pass the students will begin jogging around the court passing the ball back and forth to each other. When students hear the word Sting the player holding the ball will chase their partner trying to sting (hit) them with the ball. Partner must be hit below the waist. Once the rules are explained the teacher will distribute one ball to each pair. Once the balls have been distributed the teacher will say GO!. Students will resume proper roles when hearing the words and the game will continue for 5 minutes. Stretching (3mins) Students will gather around the red square with the teacher in the middle. Teacher will be in the middle, providing both verbal instruction and visual demonstrations of stretches for the students to follow. Stretches will be held for approximately 15 seconds each. Refer to the tip to toe stretching diagram (Appendix A), make sure at least one stretch for each part of the body is covered). Skill Development and Practice (10 mins) Students will be put into groups of two and asked to sit with their partner. The teacher will pass one ball to each group. They will be asked to stand back to back with their partner and to take 5 steps back and turn.

The teacher will then go over the proper way to throw an overhand pass with the ball.

o Cues for the Overhand Throw: o "Side to target": Point non-throwing side/shoulder to the target (i.e., if left handed thrower, point right shoulder/side towards target). o "Arm way back": Throwing arm way back behind head. o "Step": Step with your opposite foot towards target (i.e., if throwing with left hand, step towards target with your right foot). o "Follow through": Follow through by letting your throwing arm come across the opposite side of your body. Students will practice their overhand throws with their partners for 5 minutes. Students will then be allowed to practice either overhand throwing or underhand throwing (that was taught in the previous lesson) for 5 minutes.

Culminating Activity- Danger Zone (20 mins) DANGER ZONE This game requires several balls. Players are divided into two teams, and begin on an end line. (we will be using the lines of the volleyball court) Once the rules of the game are explained groups will be given 1-2 minutes to strategize. Each team starts with a few balls, and the object of the game is to get all of the players across the danger zone to the other side without getting hit with a ball. If a player is hit he/she must go back to the start. One or two players can go at a time. Players must be on one of the lines to catch and throw a ball. (Alternative) The game could begin with some players on each team on both lines. The game will last 20 minutes( if the game is done quickly consider changing the teams and play again or keep the same teams and play again). Closure and Dismissal (2 mins) Students will be asked to have a seat where they are and give the attention to the teacher. Students will be asked to close their eyes and breathe deeply in and out. (This will last 30 seconds to 1 minute) Students will then to be asked to line up quietly. Students will be called according to colour (ex. Students wearing red, blue, green, etc.)
