Influences on the movement - historical events, cultural events, trends or values that influenced the art of that period. - In the late 19th century Expressionism emerged as a form of self-expression and subjective search for personal emotional truth with the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch. - A response to Impressionism (painting landscapes) - The first distinct style of expressionism was Fauvism. It emerged in Paris in 1905 and was led by Henri Matisse (1869-1954). - Van Goghs Sunflower painting (1888) used intensity of expressive colors which opened the eyes of viewers to his feelings on a subject. Color became an instrument for emotional expression. This became a key influence in the development of Fauve, Die Brucke, Der Blaue Reiter. - Munchs The Scream painting (1893) shows a psychological blueprint of Expressionism with its distorted lines and exaggerated colors that expressed anxiety and alienation. - Die Brcke (the bridge) was founded in Dresden in 1905, this group combined traditional German art with African, Post-Impressionist and Fauvist styles. - Der Blaue Reiter 1911-14 (Blue Rider) Based in Munich, it was named after a Kandinsky painting from the cover of their 1912 Manifesto. - Die Neue Sachlichkeit 1920s (New Objectivity)Centred on Berlin, this group explored a new form of realism with a socialist flavour. Vividly satirical in its portrayal of corruption in wartime and postwar Weimar Germany 4.
