NAPLAN TEST WARNING (Required 1008 Contemporary perspective Lec3)

The Rudd government took advantage of Naplan testing by using the results in order to evaluate and compare school performance Former Education minister Julia Gilliard was heavily influenced by education reforms in the States Under Obamas leadership, America is distancing itself from national standardized testing U.S. Education adviser (Linda Darling Hammond), tells Australia not to follow the example which America has set Hammond believes that attaching stakes to standardized testing (i.e. NAPLAN) will cause the curriculum to be overly influenced in that direction and reduce creative opportunities Peter Garrett, (education minister) believes this will not be the case as Australia is much more balanced and NAPLAN only forms a small portion of evaluation Sheree Vertigan (President Australian Secondary Princapls Association) believes that NAPLAN is only a very small sum of what a child is capable of and that when the results are used to score a school and community, it is overstepping the original reason of testing Hammond believes that when a child is spending all of their time filling out multiple choice questions they are not learning to write effectively, not engaging in research and inquiries and not learning college and career ready skills Vertigan believes that Principals are concerned about the effect NAPLAN has on curriculum and resource time Garrett believes that NAPLAN (numeracy and literacy) equips children with the skills for a successful career Gilliard says she organise extra monetary income and rewards for teachers whose students do well Vertigan believes that teachers will lose motivation in this new competitionlike environment
