Lesson 2: Recalling Events in Jack and the Beanstalk

Curriculum Standard(s) Addressed: PKRL 3: With prompting and support, identify characters and major events in a story. Cross Curricular Connections: Science---during the activity the students will plant seeds and grow their own bean plants. Objective(s): When presented with a story, the students will be able to correctly answer questions about characters, key details, and sequence of events. The students will be exposed to literature and become familiar with prominent fairy tales. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-assessment: The students will be called individually to answer a series of questions Questions to ask: What is a fairy tale? Have they ever heard of Jack and the Beanstalk? If so, share what they know about the story.

During Assessment: Take anecdotal notes during the story and activity time Questions to ask: Do they listen attentively during the story reading? Do they participate in the question answering activity? Do they answer questions based on the story correctly? Post Assessment: After the question answering activity and planting activity talk to the students individually Questions to ask: What is a fairy tale? Can they name the story? Can they use storyboard cutouts to recall characters and events? Do they have an overall understanding of the story? Materials/Resources: Jack and the Beanstalk book assessment sheets pencil question cards 3D beanstalk and movable Jack figure storyboard cutouts bean seeds ( 40 seeds) paper towels (1 roll) plastic plates (3) water gallon sized Ziploc bags (3) grow light paper cups (20) soil wooden skewers (20) castle cutouts (20) cloud cutouts (20) cotton balls (60) crayons tape glue sticks

Prerequisites: The students must know what a character is, must be able to distinguish the major events from minor events in a story, and should know the term fairy tale and what it is. The students must also be able to use coloring utensils and glue sticks.

Procedures: 1) Review the letter F, the sound of the letter F, and how it relates to fairy tales 2) Review the fairy tales that have already been read in class (The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella) 3) Read aloud Jack and the Beanstalk 4) Explain the procedure for the whole group activity (correctly answering questions to move the Jack cutout up our own beanstalk) 5) Call on individual students to answer questions based on the story until all the questions have been correctly answered and we have made it all the way up and back down the beanstalk 6) Reiterate the main events of the story 7) Explain that we are each going to make our own beanstalk by planting beans 8) Explain how a seed grows into a plant and what plants need to grow (i.e. water, soil, sunlight) 9) Show the sample castle that they are going to make to go in their plant cup 10) Divide into small groups to prepare the beans on a plate to sprout 11) Place each groups plate under the grow light 12) Remain in small groups to color the castles, attach the castles to the wooden skewers, and add cotton balls for clouds 13) Dismiss 14) Call students up to my table in groups of 2-4 so that they can use the flannel board cutouts to retell the story using main events and key details Extension: Once the beans sprout under the grow light (allow about a week), plant the bean sprouts in individual cups. Use this time to discuss why we are growing beans, recall the story, and talk more about how plants grow.

Accommodations: Preferred seating for those with behavioral or sight problems during whole group instruction. May need to extend discussion about planting and growing beans with the students because some may have never been exposed to the process.
