Essentially , he was ambitious. (Story about how ambitious

he was when he was young)
He was strongly determined to establish a new country.
He shared his vision with people using good
communication skills, especially his persuasive writing, and
speaking skill about Communism.
Other reasons:
• His first up rising was near his hometown.
• He gradually gained trust from the people, such as he conquered some
areas, he gave peasants land, offered free education etc..

I believe you can find more reasons through Jim Collins level 5 Hierarchy.

• Level 5 Executive ( Personal humility and professional will) (Mao did not
reach to this point)
• Level 4 Effective leader
• Level 3 Competent manager
• Level 2 Contributing team member
• Level 1 Highly capable individual
Fact: Mao launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966.

Basically: Mao was too arrogant, egocentric! He wanted his own

vision of communism and he did not have humility. His close
followers added to his egotism.
He did not want to listen to any constructive suggestions from knowledgeable
people. Thus, at school, students only learnt about his books, no LA or other
subjects, and also proposed teenagers to travel round China instead of study. He
burned other books which were against his thoughts, ruined some people lives.
Why did some people let him do
those?
• He gained trust from people.
• He was a dictator and people feared retribution.
Conclusion
Should Leaders have Ego?

Leaders need ambition not only his/her self interests.

Leaders need to keep clear thoughts about their missions at all times
and reflect on the reality of their actions.
