A fistula is an abnormal connection between a hollow organ like the gut and the skin or another organ. There are two types of fistulas - simple fistulas have a direct communication between the gut and skin, while complex fistulas have an associated abscess cavity. Fistulas can be caused by anastomotic leaks after surgery, trauma including iatrogenic injuries during surgery, inflammatory bowel diseases, malignancies, radiotherapy, or malnutrition.
