Jijabai was born on 12 January 1598, to Lakhojirao Jadhav (Yadav). As per the customs of that age, she got married at an early age to Shahaji Bhosale, a nobleman and military commander under the Adil Shah sultans of Bijapur.
Jijabai had observed the plight of the land of Marathas being overrun repeatedly by the Moghal of Delhi and the Muslim kings of south. She wholeheartedly supported her husband's cause to establish a Hindu state .

Jijabai emerged as a woman with vision, whose deep devotion to the Hindu nation lead her to foster feelings of patriotism and commitment. Her strong sense of duty, courage, fortitude and self-respect were the highlights of her character which were passed on to her son Shivaji
Jijabai implanted in Shivaji not only the idea of free Maharashtra but also imbued him with the ideas of tolerance, justice and fair play. These were the virtues that made Shivaji a great king.
