3 Point Lighting

Three point lighting consists of three separate lights the back light, key light and fill light. The key light is the most influential and is placed to the side of the subject of the shot. The fill light has 50% of the power of the key light as is placed on the opposite to the key light. The back light also has 50% of the power of the key light and is placed behind the subject to give it an outline. The main aim of three point lighting is to create the illusion of a three-dimensional subject in a two-dimensional image.
