MODIFICATION 1 Date modified: 10/3/09 Old frame design: Our previous design (as shown above) had 3 trusses. The reason for this was to increase strength and allow more triangle support structure, After building a prototype, testing proved that when a roller is applied, the weight of the roller is focused on the centre truss. This is because the dimensions of the roller are 15cm wide and 15kg in mass. The outside trusses are 24cm apart, and hence, the entire weight on the middle truss. To solve this problem, we changed our design to a bridge with 2 trusses spaced 15cm ‘apart to share the weight of the roller, while still being wide enough to support the car if it has sideways movements by extending the pop stick road out from the 2 trusses. The reason for this is that if'a mousetrap car drifts sideways to hit the rail, itis more then likely that it wont reach the finish line and could cause some ‘external damage to the bridge, which would then make it less likely that it will hold the require and desired weight. As the car has 3 attempts of successeeding, we feel it ‘would be better to let the car fail it’s first attempt and not risk damage to either. Modified design: MODIFCATION 3 Date changed: 12/3/09 Previous design: In order to find ways to strengthen our bridge in ways which barely increase the ‘weight of our bridge, the team today discussed using sting on the trusses to stop the ‘warping of the wooden frame. The strength of the string is stronger then the wooden pop stick, which means in certain places, we could replace the wood with string which ‘would even minimise mass. However this isn’t possible very often because the string ‘won't provide an outward force, so it can only be used where tension of the string is high, Modified design: ee eee S4v “4
