SAPLINGS YESTERDAY - MIGHTY OAKS TOMORROW

In the fall of 1950, we, who were to become the seniors of '54. began our nurture in high school as saplings in the newground of L.C.H.S., numbering 224 strong, During our first ]lear, the teachers toiled - -wirhour much assistance from us+-to clear away the undergrowth and give us a chance to stretch our branches to grasp the fresh breeze of knowledge being sent our way.

A fter becoming better acquainted with one another, we elected the following leaders: Carl Tom Hudson (pres.), Jimmy Crowder (v. -pres.), Billy Chambers (treas.), Wilma Faye Morgan (sec.), Miss Annie Mary Springer and Miss Smallwood (sponsors). Patsy Knox and Imogene Murrell were elected cheerleaders and served for two years. Our superlatives were: Patsy Knox and Sonny Rernke (best looking). Helen Boynton and Sonny Duke (best all-round). Gene Boyd and Jacque Lindsey (most popular), and Margaret Adams and James White (most athletic). Helen Boynton was fcorba 11 queen's attendant.

In addition to the school work we did as freshmen, we took time out for a pa tty on the footba II fie ld: we were the first group to use the "Greasy Spoon."

Following our survivia l as "green freshmen". we returned in the fall of 1951 as somewhat sturdier saplings, although there were only 168 of us who became sophomores. We began this year with a bang by electing the following: Sonny Rernke (pres.), Thea Jones (v. -pres.), Sonny Duke (sec.), Carl Tom Hudson (treas.), and Mrs. Lindsey and Mr. Odeneal (sponsors). Our superlatives were: Jane Simms and Thea Jones (most athletic), Martha A. Mathis and Sonny Rernke (most popular), Mary Love and Wayne Thompson (best an-round), and Patsy Knox and Nathan Crawford (best look ing), Doris Dan ie Is was footba n queen's at tenda nt, Our sophomore class recreation was a hayride to Joe Wheeler Dam; weren't those wieners good!

By 1952, when we entered our junior year, our rootswere firmly embedded in the earth of learning. There were 124 of us and, as usual, we began the year by selecting our leaders, who were: Wayne Thompson (pres.), Cecil Weeks (v-pres.), Nathan Crawford (treas.), Martha Ann Mathis (sec.), and Miss Old and Mr. Henson (sponsors). Our superlatives were: Betty Butler and Tom Hudson (most popula r), Betty Clifton and Rex Burks (best looking), Mary Love and Theo Jones (best a lt-rcund), and Jane Simms and Bobby Frazier (most athletic). Doris Daniels and Martha

A nn Mathis were elected cheerleaders and Mary Love was football queen's attendant. Our class was the last one to publish the WILDCAT as a junior class project; Delbert Berryhill and Nathan Crawford were editor and assistant editor, respectively. Some of the money we made this year went to help the 1953 seniors make their Mobile trip.

A s the result of a II om efforts and considerable pruning and shaping by the faculty, we came into our own in '53; we became seniors+-lao of us. Our officers were: Delbert Berryhill (1'Ce5.). Wilma Faye Morgan (v. -pres.), Martha Holt (sec.), Sonny Duke (treas.), and Milton Griffin (sgt.> at-arms); Mrs. Hendrix, Miss Smallwood, and Mr. Nix were our sponsors. Our superlatives were Doris Daniels and Bobby Frazier (best looking), Melba Butler and Cecil Weeks (best all-round), Martha Holt and Sonny Duke (most popular), and Jane Simms and Rex Burks (most athletic). Our cheerleaders were Mauvline Hughes and Gwyndol Love: the football Homecoming Queen was Elizabeth Ayers, and her senior attendant was Barbara Bonner. Jane Simms was honored by being named Miss Law-Co-Hi, and Sonny Duke was named Bachelor of Ugliness.

In addition to doing our c lasswork, we found time to take even a greater part than in previous years in extracurricular activities, including athletics and clubs. Much of our time was spent in feeding the hungry spectators at ba 11 ga rnes and in selling magazines (The senior and freshman classes- composed the victorious Gold Team!) in order to raise money. As a result of these activities, we reached our goa 1 of $4,000; this amount was app lied on the cafeteria build ing fund. In spite of our hard work. we had our share of fun.

We en] oyed a wond erfu 1 aU -d a y picnic at 10e Whee ler , andallofus will remember with pleasure the gifts received a t the banquet which was attended by the seniors and faculty on Aprt] 29. Graduation week opened with the Baccalaureate Sermon on Sunday. May 9, and our high school da ys were officially ended with a reception for students, parents, and teachers after the graduation exercises on May 14.

Graduation showed us that truly, we had grown; buds had become leaves; twigs, limbs. Now we could see the sun rise and look forward to becoming the .. Mighty Oaks of Tomorrow."
