DETI IE SII D Et
OBJECTIVES :
After completing this experiment, you will beable to :
- Determine the silt and clay content in a given sample of sand
- Determine the suitability of sand to be used for construction purposes.
APPARATUS, INSTRUMENTS AND MATERIALS :
Measuring cylinder capacity 250 ml
2. “Sand
3. Water
4. Salt .
RATIONALE :
Normally some harmful substances aré found in aggregates. The impurities in
the sand interfere with the hydration of cement. The-arge quantity of organic matter
are harmful and hence such aggregate should be rejected. The coating of impurities |
i.e. silt and clay prevent the development of good bond between aggregate and cement,
paste, peadtin t 7 t
Thus silt and dust increase the amount of water for givari workability. So this field,
test is required to determine silt and clay content in given sample ‘of sand and
suitablility of sand for construction. If the field test Indicates percentage of si
exceeding 6% by volume then it is advisable to wash the sand before use.
PRECEDURE :
- "Take approximately 50 ml of solution having 1 % of common salt.
- Add the sand till it reaches the level of 100 ml mark
+ Add more solution until the total volume of mixture in the cylinder is 160 ml.
~ Cover the cylinder with palm of the hand, shake vigorously, repeatedly turned upside
7 down and then allow it to stand for 3 hours.
