Week 2 of Writing Informational Essays Name: Jordan R.

Crockett Title: Plagiarism Instruction Part 2 (One was taught before Classroom take-over) Subject: Language Arts Grade Level: 6th Grade Time Allotted: 55 Minutes Materials Required: Plagiarism Handout, Bibliography Introduction, Peter Pan Packets, Anti-plagiarism skill worksheet Common Core Benchmarks for Lesson: WS.6.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources. Objectives Students will be able to: Demonstrate their ability to paraphrase, quote, and summarize information without bias. Determine the central idea of an article and find its supporting details. Recognize the differences between different citations found in MLA bibliographies Articulate the importance of having a bibliography at the end of their research papers. The purpose of this lesson to teach students the skills necessary to avoid plagiarism. Students will understand the consequences of plagiarism in both realms of academia and the professional adult world. Students will be able to articulate why bibliographies and proper citation methods are important to learn as learners of the English language. ________________ ________________ ______________ _________________ ___________ Instructional Procedure 1. Anticipatory Set: (10 minutes) a. There will be half sheet bellwork on the students desk like normal when Mrs. DeCapo teaches. Todays bellwork will be a short review of the plagiarism talk I gave two Mondays ago. i. Students will enter the classroom and get to work on their bellwork. ii. They will then receive a couple activity sheets to help them find the main idea and supporting details 1. Discussion of Bellwork 2. Go through days agenda. 3. Channel One News Mrs. DeCapo shows it on Mondays and Fridays

Week 2 of Writing Informational Essays 2. Instructional Input: (30 minutes) a. Review i. Quotations in Research Review and Practice ii. Paraphrasing Review and Practice iii. Summarizing Review and Practice b. Bibliography Introduction i. Different Citation styles for books, newspapers, magazines, essays, websites etc. ii. Hand out Citation Notes and discuss different citation formulas iii. Group Practice on entries 1-5 c. Peter Pan Packets i. Students may use the remaining time to work on their Peter Pan Packets in their groups.

3. Closure (5 minutes) Before you go, lets talk quickly about what we learned today. Tomorrow, there will be more bibliography practice with a partner.
4. Differentiation Considerations: a. Accommodations for LD learners: i. Collaborative Groups for strong and weak readers alike. ii. Discussion more interactive iii. Easy to follow worksheets iv. Time Allotted: 55 Minutes

Materials Required: Bibliography Citation Formula Notes, Bibliography notes, Bibliography Practice sources, Common Core Benchmarks for Lesson: WS.6.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources. Objectives Students will be able to: Demonstrate their ability to cite several different sources accurate in a formatted Works Cited page. Recognize the differences between different citations found in MLA bibliographies Articulate the importance of having a bibliography at the end of their research papers. The purpose of this lesson is to provide students an opportunity to practice their citation skills as they learn the different formulas to create a perfect bibliography for their research papers. The students will learn that learning the citation process is an important skill not just for now, but for their learning in future English classes, all the way up through university. ________________ ________________ ______________ _________________ ___________ Instructional Procedure 5. Students will enter the classroom and get to work on their bellwork. ii. They will then receive a couple activity sheets to help them find the main idea and supporting details 1. Discussion of Bellwork 2. Go through days agenda. 6. Instructional Input: (30 minutes) a. Review i. Different types of citation on overhead projector b. Bibliography Introduction

Week 2 of Writing Informational Essays i. A variety of sources will be available for students to practice citing from. ii. Have students work in their study groups to fill out each category on their bibliography worksheet. They will need to study the formulas and figure out what book goes to what citation. It is an investigation. c. Peter Pan Packets i. Students may use the remaining time to work on their Peter Pan Packets in their groups.

Crockett Title: Mini-Lecture on Proof Reading (Grammar) Subject: Language Arts Grade Level: 6th Grade Time Allotted: 55 Minutes Materials Required: Proof Reading Paragraphs Common Core Benchmarks for Lesson: L.6.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Objectives Students will be able to: Find and correct various grammatical errors in a paragraph as preparation for proof reading their papers. Determine correct comma usage Use colons properly. Practice using the right word (their, there, theyre) Recognize misspelled words and correctly fix them The purpose of this lesson is to encourage good proof reading skills in preparation for the peer edit workshop during the research paper writing process. This is combines practice with comma usage, colons, practicing usage of the write word, and spelling. ________________ ________________ ______________ _________________ ___________ Instructional Procedure 9.
