Meiosis Lab
In this lab, you will be modeling meiosis. There are questions embedded in the procedure, so make sure you answer those as you go along. 1. Get all materials: a. 4 white pipe-cleaners b. 2 green pipe-cleaners c. 20 red beads d. 20 black beads e. 1 dark colored pencil, and one light colored pencil 2. Place 10 red beads on one white pipe-cleaner, and 10 red beads on another ***MAKE SURE TO FOLD OVER THE PIPE-CLEANER SO THE BEADS DONT FALL OFF!!!** a. Connect these two pipe-cleaners with a green pipe-cleaner exactly in the middle (there should be 5 beads on each side of the pipe-cleaner) 3. Place 10 black beads on one white pipe-cleaner, and 10 black beads on another a. Connect these two pipe-cleaners with a green pipe-cleaner exactly in the middle 4. Draw out what your pair of homologous chromosomes look like using the properly colored pencils (make sure to indicate the proper number of beads) in the cell below:

a. Label the following on your diagram above: homologous chromosomes, sister chromatids, centromere b. How many chromosomes does you cell have? _______________ 5. Place the chromosomes next to each other and have them cross-over some genes by removing some red beads from one chromosome, removing the SAME NUMBER of beads from the black chromosome, and then switching their places a. Draw out what your chromosomes look like after crossing over:

b. In which stage of meiosis does crossing over occur? _____________________

6. Line up your chromosomes next to each other, and then separate the homologous chromosomes until they are about 6 inches apart. a. Which 2 stages of meiosis did you just demonstrate? __________________________________________________________ b. What separates during anaphase 1? Homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids? __________________________________ 7. Now pretend your original cell has also completed telophase 1 and cytokinesis. a. Draw the chromosomes in your 2 new cells in the spaces below:

b. How many chromosomes are present in each cell? ______________ 8. Your two new cells have now undergone prophase 2 and metaphase 2. Take off the green pipecleaners, and separate the sister chromatids until they are all 3 inches apart. a. Which phase of meosis did you just demonstrate? _____________________________ b. What just got separated? Homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids? ______________________________________________ 9. Now your cells have undergone telophase 2 and cytokinesis. 10. Draw out the chromosomes in your 4 new cells in the circles below:

a. How many chromosomes are in each cell? ___________________________
