FABRIC ENGINEERING ON UV PROTECTIVE GARMENTS

INTRODUCTION
UV light ranges from 150 to 400 nm. It accounts for 6 % of solar radiation. UV radiation is highly energetic and capable of converting into thermal and kinetic energy which is absorbed by intra cellular structureDNA It triggers the production highly reactive oxygen free radicals in skin.

EFFECT OF UV RAYS ON SKIN

ROLE OF FABRIC
When uv rays fall on fabric part of which is reflected , some are either absorbed or diffused through the fibers and part is scattered within the material.

PARAMETERS
The various parameters of fabric affecting the resistance to UV rays can be grouped into Fiber properties Yarn properties Fabric properties

FIBRE PROPERTIES
Fiber chemical structure and type Presence of chemical compound in fiber like delustrant , dye . UV blockers Fibre cross sectional size and shape Presence of natural waxes , lignin and pectins.

EFFECT OF UV ABSORBERS ON FIBRES

YARN PROPERTIES
Yarn bulkiness Yarn hairiness Whether the yarn is texturised , filament or spun yarn

FABRIC PROPERTIES
Fabric cover factor Fabric thickness Fabric treatments such as millings , sandings improve cover factor and so UV protection Fabric structure plain weave has a better UV protection

Fabric coating with UV absorbers, OBA , Dyeing with certain class of dyes that has high adsorption of UV rays. Fabric porosity is indirectly related to UV absorption.

DESIGN OF FABRIC
Fiber poly ester cotton treated w nano wool pdr or poly nylon etc

Contd..
Yarn - more bulkier and texturized FABRIC weave : plain weave cover factor : greater than 93% porosity : < 1 to 1.5 %

Contd..
Chemical treatments : O.brightning , UV blocking agents ( zinc oxide , titanium oxide ) Dyeing : natural dyes with mordants, dyeing with green tea extract etc
