Why start with schools?

The sooner that you can generate the childrens thought processes as to the challenges, the sooner they will develop and assist in the ownership of the solutions, thus providing this much sought after sustainability.

Children & students are the very future of a community, of our world. Influence them and you influence tomorrows politician, doctor, teacher and industrialist; and consequently we can potentially change a DR culture from fatalistic, from helpless, to a hopeful, capable and responsible resilient clusters of communities, regions and countries; However..........if we are to concentrate on the students/children, educating them collectively within the schools, then we must make all learning establishments a safe environment. It is suggested Schools to be used as a focal point working examples of resilient construction methods, for the communities to replicate. Schools being designed and built as visual examples displaying every facet of safe construction. Resilient Schools offer a place of refuge post disaster; however this strategy must work effectively with the early re-establishment of education studies relieving parents from child minding duties, allowing them to then concentrate on their family recovery. The School acts as a focal point for community activities for adult education and awareness, family activities, community liaison and social meetings. A useful asset, needing to be protected, nurtured and designed accordingly; not only designed as a child friendly learning environment but equally a centre of excellence for communities to develop socially, building resilience and capacity for enterprise and the much sought after sustainability. A key element of recovery is the reinstating of education. The sooner children resume school, the sooner normal routines are established, with parents relinquished from child minding being then able to concentrate on rebuilding their losses and generating an income.
