REFERENCES Following documents in totally or in part shall form the reference documents: ASME B31.3 TERMS & DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this document, the term Shall indicates a mandatory requirement and Should indicates a recommended practice. POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT Heating rate from ambient temperature to 3000 C shall be unrestricted. Heating rate shall not be more than 2000 C per hour as per applicable specification. Holding Temperature shall be as per approved specification / ASME B31.3. Holding Time shall be approved Specification / ASME B31.3. Rate of cooling shall be 2000 C (max.) per hour up-to 3000 C and thereafter normal air cooling. THERMOCOUPLE POSITION FOR PIPING The number of thermocouple shall be used for various sizes of pipe joints as follows. Up to 6 dia : 01 No. Above 6 dia to 10 dia : 02 Nos. (1800 apart) 12 dia and above : 03 Nos. (01 no. at bottom and 02 and 03 at approx. 1200 apart.) 20 dia and above : 4 Nos METHODOLOGY Thermocouple of K type shall be tacked on the welded joints and shall confirm to BS 1041 Insulated Ni-chrome wire coil of 4 6 inches wide shall be wrapped around the pipe weld Joint. Manufacturer test certificate shall be submitted for thermocouples, compensating cable etc before start of the job. Heating elements (Ni & Cr wire) in the form of coils or finger shall be wrapped on & around the weld and heated electrically with cover of mineral wool & ceramic pad / blanket. Suitable safety measure shall be taken to avoid electric shock / accident. Control of temperature shall be done using microprocessor / computer controlled system. The desired time-temperature cycle shall be entered into the microprocessor/computer. Heating cycle shall be maintained as per specification. PWHT shall start from beginning if there is any power failure during the total heat cycle except when temperature variation less than 500C or rate of heating / cooling. However if there is disruption of power during cooling, entire PWHT operation is to be repeated. Either, side of the weld seam under heating to be insulated sufficiently. TEMPERATURE RECORDER The Automatic calibrated multi Temperature recorder shall be used with calibration Certificate for indicating and recording the temperature.

Suitable calibrated recorder shall be used having proper charts with necessary attachments and accuracy. PWHT charts shall provide all the necessary data i.e. Date, Chart No., Recorder Model & Sl. No., Line / Iso & Joint No., Starting & Ending time, Rate of Heating, Rate of Cooling, Soaking Time & Temperature of the cycle. Charts speed shall be adjusted to satisfy the PWHT cycle. TEMPARATURE CONTROL SYSTEM The temperature control system shall guarantee a post weld heat treatment within the limits of the specification.

DOCUMENTATION The heat treatment chart shall have the following information Starting and Completion Time and Date. ISO, Line and Weld numbers as applicable. Recorder Identification Number.

QUALITY ASSURANCE & QUALITY CONTROL After completion of heat treatment the hardness of the weld joints shall be checked if required by applicable specification. Maximum hardness should be as per specification. Quality Assurance shall be maintained by ensuring the systematic implementation of this procedure and to ensure that necessary quality records are maintained.
