KERALA IS THE SOUTHERNMOST STATE OF INDIA AND IT RETAINS MANY ANCIENT DRAVIDIAN CULTURE. IN KERALA THERE ARE VARIOUS FOLK DANCE OUT OF THAT ONE FOLK DANCE IS OTTAM TULLAL OTTAM TULLAL IS THE WAY OF COMMUNICATION TO THE PEOPLE ABOUT THE ANCIENT SCRIPTS AND KNOWLEDGES.

Ottam Tullal means belief and ritual in the Muttappan culture of North Malabar which is situated in Kerala. This picture shows that he is praying to God Muttappan for the various problem (Garuda Garva Bhangam). Ottam tullal is one of the folk dance which is very difficult to understand like kathakkali, Margamkalli, kaikotti kalli, etc

 The story was Kallyana Sougandhikam an extract from Mahabharata where lord Bhima travels to collect a rare flower by name kallyana The king of Chembakassery who knew about the pranks of Kunjan Nambiar and ordered that from that day onwards no ottamthullal will be performed in the Ambalapuza temple compound (even now this order is obeyed by the temple)..

 Kunjan Nambiar is the father of Ottam tullal. Kunchan Nambiar believed that entertainment without humour was useless. Kunjan Nambiar, for his inspiration, turned to legend and mythology but gave to each story or episode a totally contemporary slant. He took figures from the Raamaayana and Mahabhaarata, the Bhaagavatham and other Parana and exposed them to the modes and mores of the society of his time. So this is one of the folk dance which is situated in the heart of Kerala and an art to deliver the perfect message to people.

 The two main line of ottam tullal run like this: Embranalpam kattubujichal, (If the chief of the temple steal and eat a little,) Ambalavasikalokke kakkum. (All the dependents of the temple will steal.) Asanaksharamonnu pizhachal (If teacher commits one mistake,) Ambathettu pizhakkum sishyanu. (the student will commit fifty eight mistakes.) Kunjan Nambiar making no effort to deliver a message and left to audience as they react.
