Turbulence Level

The turbulence characteristics in a wind tunnel can be controlled by a number of means such as by installing screens, grids, and spires upstream of the test section; by placing roughness elements on the floor of tunnels; by using counter jets; and so on. For structural testing, the relative turbulence intensity Ir is normally in the range 1030%. Some tunnels have been designed to have very low turbulence level (less than 1% or sometimes even less than 0.1%). Such tunnels are for special purposes such as studying smooth, uniform flow around circular cylinders.
