Nicoll Honors Freshman English February 28, 2013 Introduction for research essay Most of us dont realize that almost every electronic device of this current generation is the result of Quantum Theory. If you didnt know yet, Quantum Theory is most likely what made you hate physics class in college (or high school). The human race would still be stuck in the 19th century if it werent for Quantum Theory. I will try to keep this essay as math-free as possible, but there are some inevitabilities when dealing with topics such as these. Quantum Theory is everywhere. Look around your environment, from the simplest leaf to the most 3D printer, Quantum Mechanics is everywhere around you. The idea of Quantum Mechanics first sparked when Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann suggested that energy levels of a physical system could be discrete in 1877. Although there have been experiments beforehand that would go along with Quantum Mechanics (double-slit experiment by Thomas Young in 1805), this was the first time it was explained in Mathematics. Another key event in the history of Quantum Mechanics is when Max Planck proposed the idea that energy can only be produced or immersed in small packages (the discrete quantities proposed by Boltzmann) in 1900.
