What do they all have in common? They are called groups, same number of electrons in the outer shell, similar configurations. The electrons in outer shell (valence electrons) 5) What is an atom? Atoms are building blocks, basic units of an element. Cannot be seen and they are made of protons, electrons and neutrons.

6) What is a nucleus? The nucleus of an atom is the centre of an atom. Protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Also it is positively charge because of the protons. Electrons surround the nucleus. 7) Define Atomic Number : The atomic number is the number of an element on the periodic table. It is also equal to the number of protons inside the nucleus of an atom. Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, also electrons. 8) Define Atomic Mass: The atomic mass is the total mass of one atom of an element.It is the mass of the protons and neutrons combined. Mass of an atom, number of protons, and neutrons in an atom.
