Foreword
In commending this booklet, I find myself wanting in the first place to congratulate the members of the
Parish of Traprain Burial Grounds Survey Group on this sample of their work and the way they have
presented it in such an easily readable form. I realise that a survey of this sort may well begin with
enthusiasm, and yet to carry it out demands qualities of a sterner kind - skill, of course, but with it infinite
patience and often dogged endurance; shortcuts must be avoided because only painstaking persistence can
yield satisfactory results. And so, many congratulations to the Parish of Traprain Group for their
achievement in this case.

Then there is the survey itself! An undertaking like this can open up, and help to preserve, a rich mine of
information and memory. It is naturally valued in the first place by those who have family burial places
within their scope, which they cherish; but it will also be appreciated by others, often from afar, who seek
knowledge of ancestors. For the historian and the statistician, of course, it can supply information about such
things as the dominant industry, the chief occupations of parishioners, the change of tenancies and the
mortality rate among old and young.

For the curious, too, browsing through a booklet like this, questions may occur that could lead them to
discoveries about the parish or the area round about. Just take one example from this survey of the
Whittingehame Graveyard. At no. 152 mention is made of an innkeeper. Where was the inn? The answer to
this question has recently been well given once again in an article in a recent issue of East Lothian Life, in
which the contributor explains that the village of Whittingehame had once clustered round the church and
manse. It contained shops and trades, and housed some 141 people; an inn was one of the establishments.
Unfortunately, the buildings had become substandard and when Mr. James Balfour purchased the estate in
the early nineteenth century he helped to rehouse the villagers and to build a new school and a few other
buildings down at the Luggate Burn.

A survey of this kind can supply information, stir memories and raise questions, and we thank the Parish of
Traprain Burial Grounds Survey Group for this particular survey.

The Very Rev. W. Roy Sanderson, D.D.,

Introduction
In the Spring of 1996, 29 folk gathered in Prestonkirk Manse, East Linton, to begin the process of surveying
all the gravestones in Prestonkirk Graveyard. The spirited team of volunteers completed their task two years
later, and the publication Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Monumental Inscriptions provides a full and lasting
record to that place of burial.

Inspired by the results, the team expressed a desire to record another graveyard, and as during this time the
parish of Prestonkirk had become united with those of Stenton and Whittingehame to form the Parish of
Traprain, the small, peaceful graveyard nestling in the shade of the pretty Gothic kirk at Whittingehame
seemed the obvious choice. This publication is a record of the 173 gravestones the team found there.

The survey has been a voluntary effort, and I would like to express my grateful thanks to all in the team.
However, a special thanks must go to Romaine Strang, who uncomplainingly took the minutes of our
meetings and provided the coffee and ‘nibbles’; to Maureen and Bill Hewgill, who carried out the thankless
task of checking all the record sheets; to Evan and Janette Clark, who painstakingly surveyed the graveyard
and produced the plan, and who also found time to produce the computer database; to Garry Menzies, who
photographed each and every stone (and so much more!) for the archive; and to Rosemary Wilkes, for her
beautiful drawings which grace this publication.

Finally, the team wishes to acknowledge the following for their financial and practical help:

The Earl of Balfour

East Lothian Council
The Royal Bank of Scotland
The Kirk Session of the Parish of Traprain
The Girl Guides Association
The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Dunbar
Jimmy Clark, farmer in Luggate
The Very Rev. W. Roy Sanderson, formerly Minister of Stenton and Whittingehame

This plan is an extract from the Whittingehame Graveyard Plan drawn in

1880 by Charles Patterson, Surveyor, Haddington. The original is kept at the
registrar’s office in Dunbar, East Lothian, and has the following key to the
numbered areas of the plan.

1. Whittinghame Vault 4. Porch

2. Porch 5. Boiler House
3. Ruchlaw Vault 6. Vestry

Inscriptions

Stone no. 35: This 18th Century stone commemorates the short lives of John and Margrat Wolfe.

7
The use of upper or lower case here follows that as used on the stone.

Where the inscription is not fully legible, the uncertain elements are
placed in square brackets [ ].

Gaps in the inscription are indicated by three dashes ---.

All stone numbers are included in the list even where no inscription could
be deciphered.

For reasons of space, no other details are given, for example of

architectural and sculptural details, of emblems of mortality and trade, or
of materials. These extra details may be found in the full archive.

The results of two earlier surveys have been included for comparison. The
first was carried out in 1959 and published in The Proceedings of the
Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Vol. XCIV (1960-61), 264-6. The
second was completed in 1971 by Miss Jenny Brown and Miss Margaret
Warren and the record deposited with The Scottish Genealogy Society.

Some inscriptions are accompanied by an Historical Note, most taken

from the Minute Books of the Heritors and Kirk Session of the Parish of
Whittingehame.

INDEX
The list of stone numbers following each surname shows all the gravestones
with inscriptions which include that name. No attempt has been made to link
forenames and surnames and it is left to the reader to make such associations
after reading the inscriptions. Names and stone numbers shown in italics
occur only in the 1959 or 1971 surveys.

For the sake of completeness, and for the benefit of future genealogical
research, the index lists all names recorded in the inscriptions, including those
of people who are or may be still living.
