Simply The Best Welcome to Woodlawn High School home of the spirited and proud Panthers!!! Were glad you are here and invite you to become fully involved in the rich tradition of the best high school in Baton Rouge. The policies and procedures outlined in this planner have been carefully prepared and presented so that it will help you to adjust to our school and to become an integral part of it. We hope you become involved in the various extracurricular activities while you excel in your academic endeavors. Campus Policies 1. The school day begins at 7:10 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m. No students are allowed in the building prior to 6:50. Students must leave campus by 2:45 p.m. unless attending an extracurricular activity. Upon arrival, students are to either report to the cafeteria to get breakfast or remain in the courtyard. Students are not to roam the campus or enter the building or the halls. 2. If a student drives or rides to school with another student, they must leave the car once it is parked and may not return to the parking lot, unless the student has received written permission by school administrator. 3. If a school bus arrives late, students must report to the office to obtain an admit slip to class. 4. Students damaging or destroying school property will be liable for paying or replacing damaged property and will receive appropriate disciplinary actions.

All students must have an official Purple Teachers Hall Pass to leave the classroom. Students may not leave the classroom with a hand-written note or verbal permission at any time. Students cannot leave the school building or campus once they arrive, unless permission is received by an administrator. Any school debt will result in a held report card at the end of the school year. A student may not be allowed to transfer or be dropped from school unless all debts are paid in full. All P.E. students are required to purchase a P.E. uniform. Failure to dress out according to class regulations will result in academic as well as disciplinary actions. No food, beverages, or beverage containers may be brought to school unless deemed as approved school lunch or required as indicated by a doctors note. No student is allowed to make physical contact with another student while on campus. Students are not allowed to loiter in the halls, parking lot, or bathroom during the change of class. Students are required to leave the cafeteria after finished eating and may not take anything out of the cafeteria such as food, straws, eating utensils, and drink containers. Students may not eat any food or drink any beverages in the school building except for the cafeteria. This includes gum. No student is allowed to have commercial food (McDonalds, Burger King, etc.) on campus. The office does not accept deliveries of flowers, balloons, or any other non-school related items to students. Students must be picked up immediately after the conclusion of extracurricular activities. If students arent picked up promptly after the conclusion of an event, they will no longer be allowed to attend future events. Off limit areas - Before school or during lunch, students must be in the cafeteria or the courtyard, unless an announcement is made allowing students in the 500 hall due to inclement weather. Parking lot is off limits AT ALL TIMES. The only students allowed in the 300 hall are those that are first year freshman as well as mentors. All students must have an emergency card completed, signed, and on file in the attendance office.

Discipline Policies Any electronic device including (but not limited to): cell phones, CD players, MP3 players, pagers, iPads, and laptops; will be confiscated if seen or heard. If any type of electronic device is confiscated: The first offense will result in student being sent to T.O.R. and the device will be kept until a parent/guardian picks up the device. Any other offence will result in the item being kept until the last day of school and suspension. Dice, radios, playing cards, athletic trading cards, and comic books are not allowed at school. The school is not responsible for any lost item, stolen item, or confiscated item and WILL NOT investigate lost or stolen items. Tobacco use in any form (dipping, smoking, chewing) and cigarette lighters are prohibited on campus or any school function. Any inappropriate language including: racial comments, sexual orientation, or vulgar language (verbal or written) will not be tolerated and will result in severe disciplinary action. Fighting on campus, on the school bus, at the bus stop, at the transfer bus site, or in walking distance to and from school will result in disciplinary action. Fighting and instigation of a fight is a serious offense and it is the responsibility of the student to report any suspicious behavior or knowledge that a fight may occur. Fighting or instigation of a fight is a minimum five-day suspension for both involved parties. If a fight occurs, the students will be arrested as indicated by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System Zero Tolerance Policy. Louisiana state law prohibits students from carrying firearms, knives, or any other items that might inflict harm or injury to another person. Possession and/or use of a weapon constitute a recommended expulsion and may lead to arrest. Any person on campus found guilty of carrying a firearm on a school campus, school bus, or school event shall be

imprisoned to hard labor for up to five years in prison. (L.R.S. 14:95, 2) Any student that is involved in any type of bullying, including cyber bullying, will receive severe disciplinary actions that may result in recommendation of expulsion and arrest. Any verbal, written, or cyber threats made will result in major disciplinarian action and possible arrest. Student Parking: Parking tags are required on all vehicles. Parking tags are $15.00 a vehicle. Students are not allowed to park in the teachers parking lot. Students must park in the student parking lot. Students are not allowed to park cars on any adjacent private property and walk on to the school property to attend class.

Tardy Policy
1. Any student who reports to school after first hour must report to the ATTENDANCE OFFICE to check in. (Do not go to your locker or anywhere else first.) Students who check in late will be given either an excused or unexcused admit to class. No student(s) will be allowed to enter class without some type of admit slip from the office. Students who check in late and do not have one of the stateapproved excuses will be charged with an unexcused tardy. Students who are not in class when the tardy bell rings will report to the T.O.R. room (#119) to get a tardy slip. Any student who is more than ten minutes late to class will be considered cutting and the student will receive a behavior report. Unexcused tardies will be dealt with as follows: 1st tardy: Warning 2nd tardy: Warning / Parental Contact 3rd tardy: Lunch Detention 4th tardy: T.O.R. for 1 hour & Parental Contact th 5 tardy: I.S.S. (In School Suspension) & Parental Con. 6th tardy: Suspension 7th tardy: Start over at 4th Tardy & Repeat

Uniform and ID Policy


These regulations will be applied to all students who attend Woodlawn High either full-time or part-time. Freshman Academy students will have a different color top. The purpose of the uniform and ID policy is to maintain a positive learning environment, ensure safety of all students, and to create consistency among the student body. Tops Students may only wear a purple or white official uniform shirt that must be purchased at Woodlawn High School. Students may not wear a shirt that has other logos on it. Students shirts must be tucked into pants at all times. Uniform shirt collars must be seen at all times. Students may only wear a white t-shirt without any type of design, writing, or logo under their uniform shirt. T-shirts cannot be worn as outer garments. Students may wear a plain long sleeve black, gray, or white shirt under their uniform shirt in the case of cold weather. No T-shirts, including school and athletic shirts.

Outerwear 1. Students may wear jackets or solid colored long sleeve sweaters or sweatshirts as approved outerwear. 2. Students may not wear any type of other shirt over the uniform shirt including thermal shirts, long sleeve shirts, or pull over vests. 3. Students may purchase hoodies from the school. These are the only allowable hoodies on campus. Bottoms 1. All students must wear STANDARD KHAKI UNIFORM PANTS. Khaki is defined as a stout twill cotton cloth of this color used for making uniforms. 2. Students may not wear jeans, cargo pants, pants with metal studs, skinny fit pants, capri pants, cropped pants, shorts, or skirts. Students pants must be cuffed or hemmed at the bottom. The pants must be classic fit, with four regular pockets. 3. All students pants will be worn at or above the waist and be of appropriate size. 4. Students pants must have belt loops, and all students are required to wear a belt at all times.

5. Students belts must be plain leather and cannot have any type of metal studs, be oversized, be electronic, or have nameplate belt buckles. 6. Students pants may not be tucked into the shoes or tied with the shoelaces. Shoes 1. Students may only wear closed-toed, closed-heel shoes. Shoes can be sneakers, loafers, or lace-ups. Boots can be worn with pants, but pants cannot be tucked into boots. 2. Students are not allowed to wear sandals, flip flops, house shoes, slippers, Crocs or any other type of backless shoe. 3. Shoes with heels over 2 or excessively raised soles are not permitted due to safety regulations. General Dress Code Regulations 1. Caps, hats, or head coverings of any type, including bandannas, sweatbands, ear coverings, scarves, hair wraps, etc. are not to be worn at school. 2. Only girls may wear earrings, which should not be bigger than a quarter. Male students are not to wear earrings of any kind, including studs or straws to preserve the piercing. Earrings will be confiscated from male students upon sight. 3. Neither boys nor girls may wear visible body or facial piercing jewelry. Body piercing jewelry may not be covered with bandages. 4. Rollers, curlers, picks, forks, or combs in hair are not permitted. 5. Unnatural color of hair (colors not naturally occurring in human beings) or cutting of symbols or designs, including Mohawks, are not permitted. 6. Sunglasses are not to be worn at school, unless they are prescription sunglasses and approved by an administrator. They will be confiscated and kept in the school vault until the end of the school year. 7. On days designated as free dress and special events, students must follow the Dress Code policy as announced. Exceptions: 1. J.R.O.T.C. uniforms will be worn when directed by the senior army instruction.

Mandatory IDs 1. Student must wear their student ID on a lanyard around their neck and must be visible at all times on campus grounds. 2. Students will not be allowed to enter class without proper display of their ID. 3. Students without an ID can purchase a new ID for $5.00 or a temporary (only good for one day) ID for $1.00. New and temporary IDs must be purchased before school starts. Temporary IDs must be worn at eye level after purchased. 4. Classes missed as a result of a student not having a properly displayed student ID will be considered an unexcused absence. Dress Code and ID Violation Consequences for the uniform and ID violation is as follows: 1st Offense: Students will be given the opportunity to correct the violation by calling home and having appropriate uniform brought to school. If a student is in violation of the ID policy then, they may purchase a Temporary ID. If a student remains in non-compliance, they will not be permitted to attend class and will be assigned to the I.S.S. for the remainder of the day. nd 2 Offense: Follows the same procedure as 1st offense with one hour of TOR assignment. 3rd Offense: Follows the same procedure as 1st offense with one-day of I.S.S. assignment. 4th Offense & each additional offense: Follows the same procedure as 1st offense with two-day suspension. Under no circumstances, other than students entering Woodlawn for the first time without the benefit of pre-registration, will students who are in non-compliance with uniform or dress code regulations be allowed to attend class. New students entering school must be in uniform the first complete day of school after registration.

Attendance Policy
Attendance 1. To be eligible to receive grades, high school students can only have five (5) unexcused absences per class per semester. Each absentee, upon returning to school from an absence, students will be required to present to the attendance office a note from home, doctor, court, death obituary, etc. stating the reason for the absence. The note must be brought to the attendance office to be marked excused or unexcused in accordance with the law on pupil attendance. The note will be marked as excused or unexcused. If the note is marked excused, the student will be able to make up their missing work with accordance to part 5. 2. Students should bring notes to the attendance office before school starts. 3. A written parent note is considered as an unexcused absence, but students are allowed to make up work. 4. Students have three days to arrange make-up work with their teacher(s). It is the students responsibility to obtain make-up work from the teacher. (See more details in Make-Up Work section) Check-In Procedures 1. Students who arrive at school late must report to the attendance office and receive an admit slip. (Do not go to your locker first.) 2. Students with an excused admit will report to their scheduled class. 3. In each remaining class the admit slip must be presented to the TEACHER as the student was probably marked absent in the first hour class. Check-Out Procedures 1. The student will get a checkout form from the teacher fill it out and return it to the teacher. ALL CHECK-OUTS WILL BE VERIFIED. 2. The student will be notified when the checkout request has been approved. Do not come to the attendance office until sent for. 3. Only the parent or legal guardian can check the student out of school with proper I.D. 4. No telephone checkouts without prior notice and faxed Guardian I.D.. 5. Closed Campus: All persons entering Woodlawn High School must check in with the front office and receive a visitors pass.

Corridor Courtesy 1. Keep corridors open to traffic by walking to the right. 2. Do not block traffic by standing in the hall between class changes. Keep the traffic moving during class change. 3. Pass through the corridors quietly and be considerate of other students in classrooms.

Academic Policies
1. 2. 3. 4. Report Cards Report Cards are issued at the end of each semester. Grades are averaged and based on the entire semesters work. Progress Reports are issued at the end of each six weeks. Parents can access their childs grades from TAC. The code to access the account can be obtained from the Freshman Academy Facilitator. A= B= C= D= F= Grading System 93-100 85-92 75-84 67-74 66 and below (NO CREDIT GIVEN)

Make-Up Work Policy 1. Students have three days to arrange make-up work with their teacher(s). It is the students responsible to obtain make-up work from their teacher(s). 2. Students should get notes from a reliable source. 3. Students who are absent from school due to approved school function are also responsible for obtaining their own make-up work. 4. Students need to meet with teachers and plan ahead if they know they will be absent. Parent Conferences Parents may make appointments for conferences with teachers or counselors by telephoning the school Guidance office (Guidance phone number is 753-2665). Care of School Property It is essential that a wholesome respect for public property be fostered. Students who damage or destroy school property shall be required to

make restitution. Other disciplinary action may be taken to ensure facilities are appropriately maintained. Woodlawn High School Student Assessment (Approved by School Improvement team, June 6, 2005) Each student at Woodlawn High will be required to pay a $25.00 student assessment. The student assessment will be used to cover the cost of the following items: 1. The student ID card (mandatory for all students). 2. The lanyard for the proper display of the student ID. 3. School locker rental. Locks are not to be jammed open or student will be responsible for the cost of repair / replacement. 4. The Woodlawn Student Planner with the school policies and procedure including the school uniform and dress code. 5. The cost of copying, reproducing and mailing information to students homes. 6. The costs of copying instructional materials for students use, which are not funded by the school system. Discipline It is impossible for teaching or learning to take place in a classroom unless good order is maintained. Students are reminded that they must adhere to a code of good behavior not only for their own benefit, but for the benefit of others as well. For any other information, please refer to the discipline policy of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board. Class disturbance and disruption offenses, as well as disrespect for authority, will be dealt with in a stern manner. Closed Campus We operate a closed campus policy. Students must stay on the school grounds from the time they arrive until the end of the school day, or after having properly checked out through the front office. Students must bring a written parental request to the office to leave the campus for any reason. If it is necessary to leave school for any reason, a permit must be obtained, signed by the parent, doctor, or dentist and returned when the student returns to the school.

Checking out properly includes obtaining permission, signing the check-out book, receiving a check-out slip, and showing the check-out slip to each missed classroom teacher upon return. Library The school library is available during school hours, 6:50 2:40, for all student use. Students not accompanied by a teacher should have an official hall pass from a class and present it to the librarian, except during the lunch periods and before or after school. Books may be checked out for a two-week period. A five-cent per day fine will be levied for each day for overdue books. Students are expected to follow all library rules and regulations.

Parental Involvement/Volunteering The school is always in need of parental volunteers. Without the help of parents our school cannot succeed at a level that it could with your help. There are many opportunities to serve. These include: parent patrol, being teachers aides, serving on our multiple committees through the PTO. Parents will also be receiving a newsletter quarterly regarding events at the school. NOTE: ADDENDUMS TO THE HANDBOOK MAY BE ADDED DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR.
