Physical Activity & Math Lesson Plan

Description:
Students will count to ten on a partners fingers using music. Students will complete addition problems using a banana-eating, monkey manipulative. Students will pretend to be monkeys acting out lyrics to a song.

Subject: Grade:

Math

Kindergarten

Duration: 30 minutes Standards:

Indiana Math Standards K.1.6 Count, recognize, represent, name, and order a number of objects (up to 10). K.1.9 Record and organize information using objects and pictures. K.2.1 Model addition by joining sets of objects (for any two sets with fewer than 10 objects when joined) K.6.2 Use tools such as objects or drawings to model problems. K.6.4 Make precise calculations and check the validity of the results in the context of the problem. NASPE Standards: 1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. 5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Objectives: Students will:

Count a partners 10 fingers with 100% accuracy while singing a counting song.

Construct & compute eleven sums-of-ten addition problems using the monkey sets with 100% accuracy. Demonstrate their ability to dance, act like monkeys, and play air guitars or other pretend instruments, without bumping into other students or without falling down.

Prior Knowledge:
Students will use their prior knowledge of the numbers one through ten to solve single digit addition problems that all add up to 10.

Materials:
Large blow-up monkey. (Oriental Trading Co. $3) Large banana shapes cut from yellow construction paper with each containing a students name. An image of hands with numbers above each finger. (I found them by searching Google) Monkey Counting Bag craft kits purchased from Oriental Trading Company ($15 for 12 sets). If you cant afford to buy the craft kits, make your own by using paper lunch bags and construction paper, etc. You can very easily type up your own worksheets just like the ones supplied with the monkey craft kits. Whether you purchase the kit or make your own, photocopy multiple worksheets on one sheet of paper. Flash cards with addition problems that all add up to 10. (See links in references belowI used coolmath4kids.com) 0 + 10 10 1 +9 10 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 +8 +7 +6 +5 +4 +3 +2 +1 +0 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10

Procedure:
Opening Set/Anticipatory Set Ask the students if anyone knows how many toes we have. Ask them how many fingers we have? Show the students the image of the numbered hands, and have them count aloud while you point to each finger. Either pull names, or allow students to pick a classmate to be his/her partner. Have the students stand. The partner will hold up both hands in front of them, spreading out their fingers just like the image you showed. The students will sing along to the counting song while counting their partners fingers. Play the song again, and have the students switch what role they are playing. The student who had their hands up will now be the counter, and the student who was the counter will now have their hands up.

Instructional Sequence Have the students sit back down. Give them the Monkey Counting Bag sets. Have them glue the various parts, but do not give them the small bananas or addition worksheets yet. While the glue is drying, have the students stand up beside their seats. Play the Five Little Monkeys song while the students dance and play air guitar, drums, or other pretend instruments. Play the song a second time as the children will have learned the song, and will be able to sing along. Have the students gather around a table. Spread the large bananas out (name side down) on the table. Get your previously prepared flash cards & bring out the hidden, blow-up monkey and put them on the table. Have the student helper for the day pick a large banana off the table. The student who was chosen will go 1st. The chosen student will read the 1st math problem (0 + 10 = 10) using the 1st flashcard. Then all students will perform monkey actions (hands under arms, squat down, monkey sounds etc.) The 1st student will choose another large banana from the table. The chosen student will read the 2nd math problem (1 + 9 = 10). All students perform monkey actions. The 2nd student will choose the next banana, and so forth until all students have taken a turn. Independent Practice Have the students go to their seats for individual practice using their monkey counting bag sets. Give each student at least 11 copies of the worksheets, so that all 11 math problems can be solved. Give each student the small bananas that came with their kits, or the ones that you made. Each student must complete a worksheet for each of the 11 math problems. Explain to them how they can feed the bananas to the monkey as a way to solve the math problems. Be aware of students having trouble completing the problems; have them practice with their monkeys at home. Closure Have the students sing the addition problems to music. The students will sing, Zero plus ten equals ten, one plus nine equals ten, two plus eight equals ten, etc. Either write the addition problems on the chalkboard or whiteboard and point to the numbers as the children sing, or better yet, provide each student with a miniature version of the flashcards, so they can use them at home with their monkey bags. Give each student a banana trophy purchased from Oriental trading (link in references below), or make them some kind of paper certificate with a monkey and banana theme.

Adaptations:
Adaption could be made for students with learning disabilities by allowing them to use the flashcards to help them solve the addition problems on the worksheets. Adaption could be made for students with physical disabilities by having the student perform the monkey actions while seated. If the student is in a wheelchair, the students chair could be pushed around in circles as a way for them to pretend to be dancing to music or acting like a monkey.

Adaption could be made for students with gifted capabilities by having them perform the math problems without the help of the flashcards. They could also use their talents by assisting other students who may be having trouble completing their monkey business worksheets.

Assessment of Students:
Students will be assessed by visual observation during the counting of their partners fingers. The grading of the addition problem handouts will provide an accurate assessment of which students need further help, and which students have a good grasp of adding to 10. The State of Indiana has a detailed description of how to assess your students progress toward meeting the math standards. I also found an example of an assessment notebook created by a fellow teacher that can be used to assess the students. Links to both of these resources can be found in the references section below.
