Physical: The students should be able to move to and from their desk appropriately when doing a learning activity Assessment of the Objectives: After the lesson is taught the students will be asked to write a letter to me as if they were one of the key figures discussed in our lesson or one of the people during that time. The letter must address who they are, what times were like during the war, and what they would do differently during WWII. Their letter should also include at least five facts from what they have read and previously learned. This is actually my mid-assessment throughout my three lesson unit. Accommodations: All students will participate at the beginning of the lesson with the review game. During the power point I will wait until all of the students have copied the notes. The letter is an assignment the students will take home and do for homework. However, if the students do need any assistance I will help them, and answer any questions they need help with. Materials: Small soft ball Social studies notebook Pen or pencil Loose leaf paper Text book Use of Technology: The type of technology used in this lesson is the SmartBoard. The SmartBoard will be used to display notes and art work. Procedure: Yesterday we started discussing WWII.

o We are going to start out with a brief review of what we learned yesterday. Everyone gather in a circle on the rug. Before we start our review game; we need to review our self-control contract. Remember we need self-control to complete our activity successfully. Raise your right hand and repeat after me. o I promise to have self-control. I promise to listen, observe, and talk when appropriate. I promise to show respect to my peers, my teacher, and to myself. o Wonderful! Now remember if you are not strong enough to keep self-control during our activity you will ask to go sit back at your seat. I am going to gently toss the ball to a person in the circle; first, I will ask you a question that has to do with what we learned yesterday. You will then sing the answer to your question. I dont want you to just tell us I want you to sing about what you learned yesterday! After you have sung what you learned gently toss the ball to another person in the group, and the process will repeat. o So lets begin! Begin the review game.

You all did wonderful! Please walk quietly to your seats. So now that we have reviewed what we learned yesterday lets begin today with learning about more key figures in WWII.

Please take out your social studies notebooks. Have power point of key figures already pulled up.

EDUC 429

Here we have Franklin D Roosevelt. As we read in our text yesterday, Franklin is the President at this time. Did Roosevelt want to have anything to do with the war at this time? Wonderful! No, he did not. He did not want the war to hit the US.

He even managed to help Britain while the war was going on without joining into the war.

So, we have two main things to remember here. Roosevelt was the president at this time, and he did not want anything to do with the war.

Next, we have Hitler. Now, I know you have been reading about the Holocaust and about the Nazis. So, who can tell me who Hitler is? o Great! Since he is a dictator over Germany. Did he also dictate the holocaust? He did! You guys really learned a lot from the Number the Stars book.

Back in this time a dictator was like the leader of a country. Just as we have a president who is the leader of our country and the highest form of our government; a dictator is the highest form of their government. This is one way you can remember the meaning of the word dictator, because it is a vocabulary word in your book, a dictator is the leader of a country just like our president is the leader of our country.

We also have on our power point that Hitler only liked people who were Germans, which we also read in our text yesterday. However, they used the word superior, meaning higher up or better than. So, Hitler thought that the Germans were better than everyone else. What did Hitler end up doing in turn of all of this? Correct! What did he do in these concentration camps? Yes! So people that were not German were dying every day.

EDUC 429

Show art work that relates to Holocaust on the SmartBoard. Okay, take a look at this picture. Analyze what you see and tell me what you think about the piece of art. Turn in your group and discuss some of your thoughts. What do you think of when you see this picture? What feelings do you see portrayed in this picture that has to do with the feelings that people in the concentration camps may have felt? Study the picture for a minute and with your group come up with a few answers for these questions.

Now that you have had a few minutes to discuss, each group needs to give me a few answers.

Group one lets hear about what you have come up with. Most likely the students from each group will talk about the Holocaust and the sadness that was felt at this time. They will also discuss the hunger that went on at that time and how the man in the picture looks as if he is hungry and sad.

Very good discussion group one! Allow group two, three, and four to state their discussions to the class one at a time. Okay, as you all have stated this is a painting that depicts the Holocaust. This picture shows how people that were in the concentration camps may have felt. For example, as you all stated, hunger and sadness. One other I thought of is maybe even loneliness. This is the message we think the author is trying to portray through the artwork, correct? Wonderful!

You all did great today with the activities. Each of you had great discussions. We will begin with the next power point tomorrow. Day Two:

EDUC 429

Yesterday we started with the power points and discussed two slides (Roosevelt and Hitler). We also analyzed the piece of artwork that focused around the Holocaust. Today we are going to finish the power point and also read some more of our text.

Next, we have Benito Mussolini. Benito was also a leader of a country. What country was he the leader of? We read about it and discussed it in the book yesterday. Great Matthew! Yes, he was leader of Italy. He wanted to be somewhat like Hitler didnt he? Yes, that right Ann. He also wanted to attack other countries.

Winston Churchill was a leader of a country as well. He was leader over the British Government. There is the word we were talking about earlier. Government. See how leader and government are always connected?

Lastly, we have Joseph Stalin. Who do you think he was? Very good Breelyn. He was a dictator as well. He was dictator over the Soviet Union. Stalin made an agreement with Hitler not to attack one another. Very good! These are the significant people that we will focus on during our study of WWII.

Alright, you may quietly put your social studies notebook away. Get out your social studies book. Turn to page 343 where we left off yesterday. Read from page 343-345. Be sure to discuss the important parts in the passages and the bolded vocabulary.

After reading what we just read talk with your group and predict what we will be reading about tomorrow.

Hunter, tell me your prediction please. Okay very good, so, you think the US will end up going to war. Good prediction.

EDUC 429

Jessica, do you think the US will join the Axis or the Allies if they go to war? Okay, great predictions guys.

For your next assignment I am asking you to write me a letter. You are pretending to be one of the key figures we just talked about or one of the people during that time. For example, a soldier or a Jew. You will need to tell me who you are in this letter, what times were like during the war, and what you would do differently during WWII. When you are telling me what times are like during the war, these need to be five facts from what we have read and learned about the past few days. I will be passing out a piece of paper for you to do your final draft on; it also has the rubric of what needs to be in your letter on the back. These are due on Thursday at the beginning of class.

Tomorrow, be ready to finish up WWII and to learn whether the US joined the war after all.

References: Felix Nussbaum-artist of the painting I showed the students. http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/holocaust/art.htm Activity Analysis: I did two activities with in this lesson. One was to review but to also reach out to those students that need some type of movement to learn. The other analysis activity was to get all of the students thinking critically. The first activity was a review game where I threw a small ball to a student and they had to answer the question. This was appropriate to get the students moving and to review what we learned yesterday. The students really enjoyed this and seemed to learn a lot based off of the questions others answered. They also showed me that they learned what they needed to the day before by answering many of the questions correctly.

EDUC 429

The other activity I did with the students was an art walk. With this activity I displayed a painting that depicted the Holocaust. The students were asked to tell me what they understood from the picture based on what they have been learning about WWII. They had to tell me how they thought the gentleman in the painting may have been feeling because he was in a concentration camp. This really got the students thinking deeply about the Holocaust and how the people during that time may have felt.
