What are we going to learn today?

How does energy travel from the Sun to Earth? What happens to radiation from the sun? How is heat transferred by contact? How is heat energy transferred by motion? How does the earth stay warm? What is global warming? Then after were going to take a quiz so pay CLOSE attention!

What is this?

2/7/13

What is radiation?
Radiation is energy that travels through space as waves. This process happens when solar energy is absorbed by air, water, and land, it turns into energy. This energy causes winds, the water cycle, ocean currents, and changes in weather.

What happens to radiation from the sun?

All of radiation from the sun does not reach the Earths surface. Actually much of radiation gets absorbed by the atmosphere. Some of it scatters 2/7/13 and reflects by clouds and gases.

How is heat transferred by contact?

The heat is transferred by thermal conduction. The process that takes place is once sunlight is absorbed by the Earths surface it is converted or changed into heat energy. Then the heat can be transferred to other objects and moved to other places. When a warm object touches a cold object, heat moves from the warm object to the cold one.
2/7/13

How Is heat energy transferred by motion?

During convection, warm material, like water, carries heat from one place to another. This process is how heat energy transfers by motion. When water cools it becomes less denser, and so it sinks back to the bottom of the pot, this forms a circular movement called a convection current.

How does earth stay warm?

Gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor, and carbon dioxide, absorb heat energy coming from Earth. Then they radiate it back to earths surface, this process is called the greenhouse effect.

2/7/13

What is global warming?

When the temperatures increase all over the world what is that called? Global Warming! Many scientists are worried that Earth has been getting warmer over the past hundred years. Scientists think that human activities may be causing global warming. Some things that effect global warming is pollution, littering, and deforestation.
