the British Army at the time was General William Howe. The second commander who served under Howe was General John Burgoyne, who was eventually to take charge of the British Army in Canada.

Their plan was for General Burgoyne and his men to walk south to the Hudson River, where he would meet General Howe, who was to walk north from New York to the Hudson River. up and meet Burgoyne at the Hudson River, leaving Horatio Gates, the Commander for the Patriots in New York to ght only one army instead of two. This battle was a very hard battle for the Patriots to ght. It took place in Valley Forge during a cold and hard winter. It was
snowing, it was freezing, and the only food the Continental army had was re cake, made of water and our. The General for the Patriots at the time was George Washington. At the time, England had captured New York and Philadelphia. The British soldiers were warm and cozy, but the Patriots were cold and uncomfortable. Washington said, It was a dreary kind of place and uncomfortably provided. Washingtons plan was to set up a re in Valley Forge, which was located between the British army in Philadelphia, and the Continental Congress in York Pennsylvania. The Patriots did not have enough warm clothes to keep warm, and suffered from frost bite. One person that went by the name of Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben and his men from Europe were going to help the Continental army in their ght against the British. He believed in the new principles of republican government Americans had proclaimed in their Declaration of Independence. After the hard ghting in the frigid cold weather, the Continental Army had won the battle at Valley Forge, leaving them with another victory, and one step closer to freedom. This battle was signicant to the Patriots because the British Army had gotten damaged by harder hits, and the cold weather had killed many of their troops. So if the Continental Army were to have to ght the Redcoats again, there would be less soldiers to ght against.

The Battle of Yorktown

This battle may have been the most important battle out of all of the battles of the American Revolution. This was to be the battle that would decide the outcome of the American Revolution. This battle took place on September 28, 1781 in Yorktown, Virginia. The role of George Washington was General for the Continental Army. The role of General Cornwallis was to be the General of the British Army, and to lead them to victory, but the outcome was not what he expected. This was a very intense battle for both armies, but the Continental Army won for many reasons. Some key factors that led the Patriots to victory were that France supplied the Patriots with weapons, ammunition, and supplies that would help them. Another thing that led them to victory was that the Continental Army had more that twice the amount of troops as the British, so the Redcoats were outnumbered. A third reason that led the Patriots to victory was that Grasses eet sealed off Yorktown Harbor so that British reinforcements could not be sent in. The last reason that led the Continental Army to victory was that when General Cornwallis tried to escape, a storm came, sending him back, and not allowing him to cross the Yorktown River. This battle was signicant to the Patriots because it decided that they were the winners of the American Revolution and they received freedom from Britain.
