Introduction: This subject bibliography is a tool to be used by a public library to expand its transgender collection for the young adult/teen population. Transgenders are often an underrepresented group, and providing a list of titles can help individuals find materials they were not aware existed. There are a variety of material types to choose from, so one can best choose what fits the needs of the library. The materials should help teens discover new information or expand on their previous knowledge on transgender issues. These items provide reference as well as popular reading materials that would benefit any public library. Annotated Bibliography: Beam, Cris. I Am J. Boston, MA: Little Brown & Co, 2011. Print. This teen novel follows the transgender character J as he deals with issues at home, school and with the outside world. This is a well-written novel with interesting characters that highlights transgender issues without making it the entire purpose of the character. Kirkus Reviews (February 1, 2011). School Library Journal Vol. 57, Issue 2 (February 1, 2011). Belge, Kathy, and Marke Bieschke. Queer : The Ultimate LGBT Guide for Teens. San Francisco, CA: Zest Books, 2011. Print. A guidebook for teens that explores the issues of dating; sex, coming out,

homophobia and what it means to be queer. The useful book appeals to youth with its use of personal experience stories and pop-culture use, and also provides a list of additional resources available. Great Events from History : Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trangender Events Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Events, 1848-2006. Hackensack, NJ: Salem Press, 2006. Print. An encyclopedia-like book that looks at major events throughout history related to the GLBT community, with contributions from 113 academic and independent scholars. This text provides a good overview of the history of the LGBT community, and it is packed with useful knowledge that would be helpful to many high school students. Library Journal Vol. 132, Issue 6 (April 1, 2007). Reference & Research Book News (February 1, 2007). Huegel, Kelly. GLBTQ : The Survival Guide for Queer & Questioning Teens. Minneapolis, MN: Free Spirit Pub., 2003. Print. A guide for gay teens or even those who have questions, that provides information on everyday issues that can arise for teens as well as their parents. This guide has a lot of useful resources and has a vast amount of information in a single book.

A novel that follows a teen named Logan who falls for the new girl at school named Sage, but Sage turns out to have been biologically born a boy. A relatable novel that deals honestly with the topic of transgender identity without being preachy, this is a valuable resource for teens that are unfamiliar with the topic of transgenders. Westminster, MD: Beacon Press, 2007. Print. A book written by a journalist with 20 years experience in LGBT issues that gives advice and information on legal issues that LGBT teens might face. A very important book that provides resources for the legal issues that LGBT teens might face, and provides support for both the teens and parents. The biography of Oxford graduate Laura Dillon who secretly changed transformed into a man in the 1920s before the terms transsexual or transgender were known. An adult biography that will also be useful to teens with its analysis of sciences view of gender over time as well as the advances with plastic surgery. The Full Spectrum : A New Generation of Writing about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Other Identities. Bridgewater, NJ: A. A. Knopf, 2006. Print. A collection of essays, poems and photographs by individuals aged 13 to 23 that look at lesbian, gay and transgender issues in the 21st century. A mystery novel that follows transgender insurance investigator Scotti House who becomes involved in the kidnapping scheme involving daughter of a socialite. This resource provides teens with a website that continuously reviews fiction books and can allow them to stay current with fiction on various LGBT topics. Trans Generation. Dir. Jeremy Simmons. New Video, 2006. DVD. An eight-episode documentary that follows four transgendered college students and the

obstacles the face. A documentary that can appeal to teens who enjoy reality television, that provides a candid view of the issues of gender reassignment surgery and dealing with issues one might face at college as a transgendered individual. Video Librarians Plus Vol. 21, Issue 3 (May/June 2006). Transamerica. Dir. Duncan Tucker. Perf. Felicity Huffman , Kevin Zegers , et al. Weinstein Co. Genius Products, 2006. DVD. A movie that follows a male transsexual who is about to finalize her gender reassignment surgery when she learns that she has a son, which leads the parent and child to take an unexpected and enlightening road trip together. A movie for which the lead actress Felicity Huffman won an Emmy that looks at the issue of transgenders while also portraying a very profound story of humanity.
