B. Development of Lesson 1. Presentation Let the pupils locate the key sentence in the following paragraph. Lapu-Lapu was a chieftain in Cebus island of Mactan. He refused to be under the rule of Spain. Because of this, he and his followers fought Magellan and his men in the battle of Mactan. He killed Magellan and defeated the Spaniards. Lapu-lapu was the first Filipino to fight for our freedom. He was truly brave. a) Food often travels many hours before it reaches your table. Bringing food to the many towns is a big work. Many workers are needed. Trucks, ships and even airplanes are used. They transport food to different places.

2. Analysis and Discussion Ask: How can we locate the key sentence in the paragraph? What should we remember in locating the key sentence? We can always express ideas in sentences. Then we put sentences into paragraphs. When we put over ideas into paragraph, then what we say will be understood by others. A paragraph can have many ideas but the most important idea is what you call the key sentence. It may be found at the beginning, middle or at the end of the paragraph. 3. Generalization Say: Say: In looking for the key sentence always remember that it is the main idea of the whole paragraph. It is often found at the beginning at the middle at the end of a paragraph.

Have pupils read the paragraph again and point to class the key sentence in each paragraph.

C. Post Activity 1. Application Where Is It? Materials: Method: paper with 3 columns

1. The purpose of the game is to help children locate the position of the key sentence. 2. Tell the children that they are going to read short paragraph. Each of this paragraph has a key sentence. It may be found at the beginning, middle and end. 3. If the children saw at the beginning, they will write it at the first column. If it is in the middle, then they will write it on the second column and so on. 4. The pupil who got the most check wins the game. Paragraph 1 Doing a work well can teach us to improve ourselves. Work can show us our skills. We can learn the value of labor. Working can teach us many things. Paragraph 2 Ducks quack. Dogs bark. Birds chips. Lions roar. Owls hoot. Cows moo. Animals differ in the sound they produce. Paragraph 3 Gravity is the pull of the earth. It causes things to fall. If you let go of a ball, throw it upward, it will come back down the earth. Falling leaves always go down to the ground. The pull of the gravity brings they too the ground. Paragraph 4 Malvar worked very hard to finish the small flower garden he was doing in school. He promised his teacher he was going to finish it before the end of the month. Wen it was ready for planting, he planted rose and watered them everyday. After two months the flowers bloomed they were all red and beautiful.

The low coasted plains on both sides are hot, with heavy rainfall. The great central plateau lying between mountain ranges has a temperature climate with the right amount of rainfall for agriculture. The valley slopes of the high mountain regions have a cool climate. 2. Trees give cool shade. Carabaos lie under their shade when the sun is hot. People on picnic stay under the shady trees. People who have to walk a long way sit under trees to rest and cool off. 3. My hobby is gardening. I take care of roses, santan and bougainvilleas. I water my plants and on Saturdays I weed and cultivate the plants. 4. The muscles in our body are of two kinds. One kind does what we order hem to do. The other kind do their work without being told to do it. 5. Electricity is the most widely used source of energy. With the discovery of electricity, our civilization made a great leap to progress.
