Technical Description: Pencil The pencil has a yellow painted exterior.

The coding etched on the outside on the yellow in black paint next to the metal casing signifies the brand, pencil number, and softness of the graphite and is indented into the wood then colored. On one end you can find an amalgam of three different pieces the pencils body, a metal casing and a rubber eraser. These pieces form the one end of the pencil as well as its method of removing unwanted or unnecessary marking. A cylindrical rubber eraser with the dimensions .5 inches by .272 inches is connected to the body of the pencil by a metal casing which is aluminum and functions as the holder that connects the eraser to the pencil body. The metal casing has a height of .533 inches and an exterior diameter of .308 inches and an interior diameter of .298 inches. Lastly the end of the pencils body of which the metal casing is attached to is deformed through crimping into an irregular polygon that measures .290 inches. These three pieces are held together by crimping in which a specialized tool creates indents into the metal casing securing both the pencil and eraser together. Now upon closer examination of the pencils body it is found that it is hexagonal in shape. The length of the pencil is 7 inches without the eraser and 7.5 inches with the eraser and has a width of .275 inches. When taking a closer look at the exposed end opposite the eraser it can be seen that the pencil is not a single piece of would carved in that specific shape but two pieces adhered together. One of the two specific pieces resembles a trapezoid with a first base width of .145 and a second base width matching the width of the pencil and lastly a height of .1375 inches. In between the two wooden pieces is a groove carved into the wood for the material used to make the marking which is known as graphite. The graphite which is a composite material has a diameter of .079 inches and is the same lengths as the pencils body without its eraser. Lastly to use the pencil various methods may be used to create an exposed point of graphite, the most common being sharpening, which shaves off the wood until a point of graphite, is exposed.
