Nationalism: is the love of country and faith in your own peeps

That drive us crazy and give your neighbour the creeps

Imperialism: is the taking over of other countries as Prizes

For money and power but a nightmare arises

Militarism: is the building up of military might

So that a nation feels strong enough to fight But what is does is create tension and spite And convince nations to make the first strike

Alliances make friends with other nations

In school we are told this makes friendly relations But it really creates too many expectations To get embroiled in group conflagrations But 4 long years the war raged the Triple Entente met defiance From Germany and Austria Hungary: AKA the Triple Alliance

WE didnt start out independent But automatically with Britain to war we went We became the stars of the show: In the air, Billy Bishop showed intensity On land it was the four battles that gave Canada its identity Dont forget Flosmans dog named SPVY! Passchendaele, the Sommes, Ypres and VIMY The last allied offensive or 100 days everyone would remember Leaving Germany no choice to surrender on the 11th hour, 11th day of November War was not just a European thingit came to Canada We had Total War, the war measures act and something extremely tragica Two ships collided and blew up Halifax from the harbour The largest manmade disaster happened on the 6th of December The war ended with the winners taking the prize They stripped Germany at the Treaty of Versailles They took all German colonies which they were quite fond of Because of the Schlieffen plan Belgium got Rwanda Germany had to keep their military at 100,000 But their navy they would drown Worse still Germany had to pay for the whole confrontation France and Belgium got war reparations But the last straw was more than these new anti German laws It was admitting guilt in the WAR Guilt Clause

PART 2. When soldiers returned many were told to take a hike So they organized and got beaten during the Winnipeg General Strike A disease swept Canada and bullets werent the only thing that caused pain 50,000 Canadians and 20,000,000 people died of the flu from Spain But good things happened too and for women, GIRLS take note In 1917, you began to get the right to vote The Famous 5 formed the circle of sisterhood They made Women people and Canada finally understood That females were equal, but the flappers didnt care They drank smoked and dressed with flare The 20s were a Crazy time for each Canadian Provinceeo There was gas in Alberta, strikes in Winnipeg, Insulin in Ontario But the 20s brought us together too The was the flapper, hockey, the model T and the radio-oo Prohibition united the land and Al Capone got respect All Canada was dry except for Quebec But celebrities were abound and heroes were made over-night With Agnes Macphail being elected to the House and Charles Lindbergh took the first transatlantic flight But the party was soon over and in October 1929 came the Stock Market Crash After 4 business cycles tanked; everyone was short of cash 1/3 of all Canadians were thrown out of work Because of the 5 cent speech MacKenzie King was a big fat dork But Bennett came up to help with a new kind of appeal Government assistance to help jump start the economy: the NEW DEAL

The CCF which was a left wing party Had roots in the Depression and today is known as the NDP People had to escape to the movies even in Canada with the new NFB Canadians also tuned into Canadas national radio, the CBC But the biggest change came from the Nazis, from Versailles WRATH They found their Saviour in the man with the funny Moustache Hitler rose from nothing; a bum in the street Through WWI he distinguished himself with his brave feets After the war he went to Munich and saw the small party of German Worker He agreed to join them, and he would soon become the main speaker In 1924 he tried to take over Germany with the SA But got busted so they put him away Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, My Struggle and his party rose to the top Because of speeches and the Depression he was impossible to stop He came to be Vice Chancellor on January 30th 1933 And quickly stole power and spewed anti-Semitism for all to see He even had his friends killed and anyone he despised He framed them on false charges during the night of the Long Knives Hitler first struck at Rhineland, then the Anschluss, and the Sudetenland Czech was next although at Munich Adolf said conquering wasnt his plan But it was his anti-Semitism about which he would constantly talk He unleashed his fury against the Jews in 1938 during Kristallnact

Part 3. Right before the hammer fell and before Poland he would attack The Nazis made a deal with the devil during the Nazi Soviet Pact War came in the form of Blitzkrieg which hit Poland in 39 On Sept 10th we declared war and lost no time Like every war There were operations galore Bridge: There was Operation Jubilee that was Dieppe There was Operation Husky that led to Ortona There was Operation Barbarossa that was the Nazi invasion of Russia There was Operation Sea Lion that was the Battle of Britain There was Operation Overlord that was D - Day By June of 1940, Hitler took Paris France He didnt stop and there and with England he decided to advance But said forget it when the Blitz failed destroying Londin So he went back on his deal and betrayed his friend Stalin There is the where the war would end and for the Nazis go bad They were finally beaten at Stalingrad But there was set backs for Canada like Hong Kong, our first taste in War you know And the disaster at Dieppe that laid the ground for our biggest invasion at JUNO We trained spies at Camp X and we got conscription in 1942 Put Japanese into internment camps that was horrible too

Post war

We emerged from the war and into another we fell with NATO united This time a Cold One in Which Europe was divided But it didnt stay chilly for long as in Korea tween North and South And later in Suez when Pearson asked for peace they wanted to punch him in the mouth After our Pearson came to retire, in 68 there was a new man called Trudeau He shot onto the public stage like a bolt from the Blue You see Quebec had forgotten the dead Maurice Duplessie And to a Quiet Revolution they did support When the blood flowed in October of 1970 Just a year after the Official Languages Act in 1969 Now all you can read French and English on boxes of Count Chocula at breakfast time Bill 22 made French mandatory in Quebecs civil service Bill 101 went further and made English Canada nervous But like the Beatles, Trudeau saved the Day He made those little FLQs run away After the killed Laporte and demanded some treasure Trudeau said Just Watch Me and started the act of War measures He also made it clear that Canadas new position Would be repatriate the Constitution All Canadians would be protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms No longer having to look over our shoulder at the United Kingdom Finally we were beginning to look like an independent nation A new Flag, an official anthem and a Constitution

Although the new transition was not a piece of cake As it was rejected in Charlottetown and before in Meech Lake But our hero known round the world from Moscow to Winnepeg Because he ran across Canada on one Leg In fact in BC there were 2 men Terry raised 300 million And the man in motion, Rick Hansen Those 2, Wayne Gretzky , Mike Meyers and Shania Twain Would put Canada on the map again But trouble came around again, blood once again in the air In Rwanda we had another, sadder hero, Romeo Delaire And after 9/11 to war we went again To beat the Taliban That was the plan Fighting in Afghanistan But we didnt understand The rage in the mountains and sand So we have had some ups and downs here in Canada since Vimy Ridge We got our national anthem, flag, and Constitution that was to bridge Our differences and our hates, our cultures and our fates
