WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN?

How do you define sustainability-Discussion How does this impact how we shape our trip? Effects of donations on a communitys future?

What are some pitfalls of international service trips? How do you react to trips that do not adopt our level of awareness about the effects of our actions?

LANGUAGE
How do you adapt your language to keep yourself in the right mindset both here and in Ghana and to communicate the true nature of this trip? When we leave, we want the community to say, look what we accomplished together, not look what those westerners did for us Partnership, helping the community meet self determined need Outreach vs service What are the connotations of these words?

HOW WE GOT WHERE WE ARE

Before 2011: Traveling clinic Summer 2011: Gloria and Mary Kate Research: 600 interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of the clinics

Summer 2012: Public toilet-FINISHED!!!!!!!!

The next need expressed by the community is to expand the clinic to a higher level based on its amenities and offerings, so that it will be better staffed by the government and have more capabilities. This requires $$$$, but we dont believe in gifts, right? So that is the conflict. What is our role? -Ideal to help the community develop the clinic with resources it already has, or to facilitate the improvement of public health knowledge -Brainstorm for a discussion next week on possible courses of action.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

We have limits! We do not want to try to change something we perceive as broken because we think our country does it better. WRONG ATTITUDE. Ex: the school We want to help the community reach its full potential its own way!
