About the Institution 1. Who are the promoters of K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR)? Ans. K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR) is part of the Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust. The Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust was established by an Entrepreneur, Philanthropist and a visionary Padmabhushan Late Shri K J Somaiya in 1959 who firmly believed that modern education must have its roots in strong values. Steeped in rich Indian culture and heritage and rooted in universal religious philosophies of the world, the Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust firmly believes in imparting education that teaches not just how to live but how to make a living. The Somaiya Vidyavihar campus comprises 34 independent institutes dedicated to Liberal Arts, Sciences, Management, Health Care, Humanities, Philosophies and Social Sciences and is spread across a 65 acre complex in Vidyavaihar, in north central area of Mumbai and an adjoining 35 acre complex at Sion in the heart of Mumbai. Somaiya Vidyavihar is home to over 27,000 students and 1,700 teaching staff. Majority of the colleges are affiliated to the University of Mumbai. About the Courses 1. Are the PGDM programmes approved by AICTE? Ans. Yes, all the PGDM programmes are approved by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).

2. What is the total intake for the programmes & duration of the programmes? Ans. 3. What is the course structure of all the PG courses (excluding Executive)? Each course is for 6 trimesters of 10-12 weeks each spread over 2 years. Each trimester includes 5-8 full credit courses, requiring 30-45 hours of class work/tutorial each, which include case studies and presentations as well. The course also includes a mandatory summer internship after the first year for 8-10 weeks in a commercial/social organization to understand the working environment in the outside world.

4. Is there any Induction Programme for the students? Ans. SIMSR has mandatory Induction Programme of two weeks at the beginning of the course to familiarize the students with basic management subjects, especially Data Models, Accounts and Economics. 5. What are the Student Exchange Programmes available at SIMSR ? Ans. The Institute has entered into strategic alliances for student exchange programme with Asian Institute of Technology Bangkok, Deakin University Australia, Vaasa University Finland, Nyenrode Business Universiteit, The Netherlands. All PGDM / PGDM (IB) / PGDM (RM) / PGDM (FS) students can avail facilities of these exchange programmes in the second year of the course. The students are selected for these exchange programmes based on their merit, first year PGDM marks and any other qualifying exam like GMAT which a University may require.

Students who are selected for the exchange programme may spend a year / semester / trimester of their study in the second year at the chosen university. All expenses for this exchange programme are to be borne by the student themselves. The approximate expenses are in the range of Rs 6-10 Lakh, depending upon the fee of the University, period of study and the student lifestyle. Students of PGDM (Executive) will be given an option of an International Immersion programme through universities in Europe and USA. The duration of this may be of 2 4 weeks and expenses are to be borne by the students. 6. Is the placement assistance provided? Ans. Yes, placement assistance is provided to the students. A full-fledged Placement Committee comprising of the students (guided by Chief Placement Manager) helps in the placement of the students. So far, SIMSRs placement record has been excellent since its inception in top organizations. More than 135 companies visited the campus for final placement for all PGDM programmes for the Batch 2010-12. 7. What is the average package of the last PGDM Batch i.e. 2010-2012? Ans. Average Package of the various courses are mentioned below: PGDM (Batch 2010-12): Rs 7.5 Lakh PGDM IB (Batch 2010-12): Rs 7.5 Lakh PGDM RM (Batch 2010-12): Rs 5.47 Lakh (Domestic), Rs.16.41 Lakh (International) PGDM FS: Not applicable as the first batch has commenced in July 2011 PGDM Executive: Not applicable as the first batch has commenced in July 2011. 8. What is a normal day at SIMSR? Ans. Life at SIMSR is a bundle of experiences. 9. What is the fee structure for the academic session 2013-2015? Ans. Annual Fee for PGDM / PGDM (IB) / PGDM (RM) / PGDM (FS) / PGDM (Comm): For first year: Tuition Fee- Rs 2,30,000/Caution Money Rs 10,000/Total Fees Rs.2,40,000/Annual Fees for PGDM ( Executive ) : Rs. 7,00,000/- (including international immersion)
P.S:

The fee for first year has to be submitted at the time of admission and the fee for second year will be announced at the end of the first year. The fee mentioned above is interim and in case if the revised fee is greater than the interim fee, the student will have to pay the excess amount. If the revised fee is less than the interim fee the excess amount collected by the institute would be adjusted as a part of the second year fee.

About the Admissions for 2013-15 1. What is the admission criterion for the various PGDM Programmes? Ans. Basic criteria for PGDM / PGDM (IB) / PGDM (RM) / PGDM (FS) / PGDM (Comm): The candidate must hold a Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration with minimum 50% marks, from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. Candidates appearing for the final year degree examination in the year 2013 can also apply subject to furnishing the proof of graduation on or by 31st July 2013, failing which the student will forfeit his / her admission. Basic criteria for PGDM (Executive): The candidate must hold a Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration with minimum 50% marks, from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. In addition, the candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of work experience after completing his graduation degree. 2. How can one apply to K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR)? Ans. (a) The candidate is required to appear for any one of the competitive entrance exams CAT/GMAT/CMAT to apply for PGDM, PGDM-IB, PGDM-RM, PGDM-FS, PGDM-Comm and PGDM-Exec. (b) Apply to SIMSR on a single online application form for all the PGDM courses (except PGDM-Executive) which is available on the SIMSR website: http://simsr.somaiya.edu. PGDM-Executive must fill an exclusive form meant for the programme. (c) Take printout of the filled up application form and paste photograph at the space provided. (d) Send the following documents to the Institute in an envelope : Filled up application form. Attested photocopies of the Work Experience Certificates, latest pay slip (to claim credits for work experience if any), Past academic records (SSC, HSC, Graduation, Post Graduate Degree and additional Professional Qualifications), Certificates of outstanding achievements - along with the filled up application form.

3. What is the last date of filling up the online application form? Ans. The last date for filling up the online application form is 15th Feb 2013.

4. Is the application fee for PGDM, PGDM (IB), PGDM (FS), PGDM (RM), PGDM(Exec) programmes same? Ans. NO. Refer to the table above for fee structure per course.

5. Do you need to apply separately for all the programmes? Ans. Yes. The application form for the PGDM courses (excluding PGDM-Exec) is same, but the course choice must be appropriately selected and the demand draft must be accordingly made. 6. What are the specializations offered for the PGDM Programmes? Ans. The specializations offered for the PGDM programme in the second year is in the area of Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations & Supply Chain Management. The courses of PGDM (IB), PGDM (FS), PGDM (RM), PGDM (Exec) are specialized courses in themselves and no further sub specializations are offered for the same in the second year.

7. Can student in the final year of their graduation apply? Ans. Yes. Candidates appearing for the final year degree examination in the year 2013 can also apply for PGDM / PGDM (IB) / PGDM (RM) / PGDM (FS) courses subject to furnishing the proof of graduation by 31st July, 2013. 8. What is the selection process? Ans

Stage1

Appear for any of the Admission Test : CAT 2012, CMAT 2012, GMAT. Fill up Somaiya On-line application form. Using a single form, a candidate can apply for more than one PGDM programme. However, for PGDM (EXECUTIVE) a separate form needs to be filled in.

Stage 2

Shortlisting of candidates on the basis of test score in the entrance/qualifying examination-CAT 2012, CMAT 2012, GMAT. Marks for these qualifying exams will be normalized for comparison.

Stage 3

Written Case analysis by each of the shortlisted candidate + personal in -depth interview that may include an extempore presentation.

Stage 4

Declaration of the consolidated merit position for each of the candidate. Two lists - one for all PGDM programmes except PGDM (Executive) and other exclusive for PGDM (Executive)

Stage 5

Counselling at the institute (KJSIMSR CAMPUS, MUMBAI). The candidate will be offered the choice of the programme based on the programme applied for, merit position and availability. All the merit-positioned candidates will be called for counselling at different time slots depending upon the rank.

Final selection is based on the following parameters: Score in Qualifying Exam + Case Analysis (written) + Personal Interaction + Past Academic Record + Work Experience + Outstanding Achievements + Statement of Purpose (if applicable ).

9. What is the weightage given to the various parameters in the final selection? Ans. 10. What is the general cut off percentile to qualify for the second stage of the admission process comprising of Case Analysis & Personal Interview (PI) etc? Ans. This varies from year to year. 11. Is there a Bank Loan assistance provided to the finally selected candidates? Ans. Yes, SIMSR provides the necessary documents and other details required by the bank for obtaining the Educational Loan. Details of Bank Loan schemes are available on the Institute website. 12. Is there a hostel facility available? Ans. Yes, the hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls. It is mandatory for all the PGDM, PGDM (IB), PGDM (RM), PGDM (FS), PGDM (Comm) & PGDM (Exec) students to stay in the hostel as it is a fully residential programme. 13. When is the Case Analysis-PI process conducted? Ans. The Case Analysis-PI process is scheduled to be conducted from 28th March 2013 in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. However, the management reserves the right to change the date for conduct of the process and change/drop any of these venues, which will be intimated through a notice on our web site. The process will be held only in Mumbai for PGDM (Exec) course. 14. What is the process of counselling, after the merit list is announced, for PGDM courses (except PGDM-Exec)? Ans. All the merit rankers (up to a cut-off point) will be called for counselling at different time slots depending on the rank, intake of the programme and the availability of seats. The status will be updated on web-site at the end of each day of counselling. Based on availability of seats, the candidate can choose a course of his interest, if applied for in the online application form. Once a candidate confirms his admission to a specific course, he must pay the fees for the programmes at the time of counselling itself. The modes of payments applicable will be notified later.

15. If I am not able to attend the counselling as per the schedule allotted to me, can I attend the counselling in the next session? Ans. You may attend the counselling between 4.00PM-5.00PM in the subsequent days. However, the choice of course will be, as prevalent, during that time of counselling only. The candidate will not be allowed to prepone the counselling date/slot. 16. In case of unavailability of seats in the course of my preference during the counselling, will I be able to take admission into other courses? Ans. You may opt for other courses, provided you had applied for the same on the online application form. 17. Do students need to clear any medical test? Ans. Yes, after admission, all the students have to undergo medical test. 18. Is laptop compulsory and will it be included as part of the fee? Ans. Laptop is not included as part of the fee. But, it is recommended that the students should have their own laptop or desktop. However, the Institute has a well-equipped computer lab for use by the students.
