Isa ang klase niya sa mga masasabi kong 'enlightening' or 'eye-opening'. Napaka intellectual kasi ng approach ni Mam. Namangha na lang ako kasi may ganun palang scholarly approaches sa mag discuss and sa pag explore ng Art. I mean, waw. Pero. Konti lang ang class interaction. Siguro kasi ang tamad namin magbasa ng readings niya, lagi kasi siya may readings na mahahaba eh. Kasalanan din siguro namen. Pero hindi rin kasi siya nagsosolicit masyado ng insights namen, discuss nang discuss. Pero grabe, I looked at Art in a more scholarly way dahil sa kanya. Although lagi akong inaantok sa class nya, first class ko kasi at nale-late pa ako sa lagay na yan. At kapag nakaksalubong ko si Mam, nagchichit-chat pa kami. Medyo information overload 'yung mga exam pero na-exempt ako somehow. Memorize the presentations, believe me. 50% (o 3.00) na class standing ang kailangan para ma-exempt sa finals. It's doable. Boring but funny (not because she jokes but because that's just the way she is), fashionista (naks), uses interactive chorva during discussions but you'll be surprised to find that the questions in the exams were not really taken from them (she gets them from some inches-thick books that can be borrowed from the CS lib) but gives good grades especially if you have good attendance, if you are attentive and if you complete the requirements. However, I'd advise future students to attend every meeting even though the subject can get pretty boring as the exams are pretty difficult to ace. Because of this subject, I had a greater appreciation for chemistry, more than I had before actually. The best thing is that I really find myself applying some (few) of the lessons learned from the course. We had about 3 quizzes, I think, puro essay where youll interpret the works, nothing objective. We had one group paper, one long exam, and finals (w/ exemption) so hindi na ako kumuha. Activities which would require time beyond class hours, physical effort (parang immersion) and financial investment.. Hindi siya hardcore English Lit class. Actually, most class discussions were 'blah', parang "let's-discuss-because-this-is-lit-class-right" 'yung dating. Boring sa standards ng iba, err, most people. Although personally, I think marami siyang activities na potentially ay mae-enjoy at kapupulutan ng brainstuff. May quizzes, exams and papers pa rin, pero hindi ganun kahirap.. May favoritism nga lang sa klase. But I really didn't mind.. until I saw my final grade, and it was screaming UNFAIR.. In short, the course is fine, but much better instructors are sure out there. When you take up a book the schedule usually goes something like: Reading day (no class) - Group Discussion/Lecture - Lecture/Group Discussion We took up: The Odyssey, Dante's Inferno, Faust I, Snow Country, Chronicle Of A Death Foretold, If on a winter's night a traveler, The Club Dumas, The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, and Snow. Exams are easy. 60% objective, 40% subjective (essay.) Anyway, it's a shame that there are nine books because she gives excellent lectures, vindicating her being a Summa. I would have loved more student-prof. discussions but I guess there were so many of us in class kaya hindi kaya, tapos marami pa ang books so medyo mabilis ang pace. Fresh grad kaya siguro mas ma-lecture talaga. But she's nice and smart, which more than makes up for the long reading list and lecture-oriented class. Si Ma'am, mabait naman, hindi terrorizing or what. Though to be honest, parang hindi siya masyadong nakaka-'explain' sa class. Or baka ganun nga lang talaga na walang depth yung discussions since introductory course lang ang German 10?... Anyways, ang components ng final grade ay yung 5 exams (70% ata), then attendance/homework for the remaining part. Yung exams, madali naman kung magre-review talaga. I actually think Ma'am Tan is not boring.. at least not to the extent that she'd play the part of a sleeping pill. Baka nakakaantok lang talaga for some ang Trigo, or the schedule of the class is siesta-ish, or baka kulang lang sa tulog , or some other reason.. Hehe. Well, sa totoo lang, in-expect ko na magiging tragic ang Math 14 ko. Yung tipong, maeexperience ko for the first time in my life na bumagsak sa Math exams, o kaya get 2.00 below for a Math grade.. But it wouldn't be this class pala. ..Naa-appreciate ko si Ma'am, yung life story niya, yung quotable quotes like "See you in heaven," at syempre yung pagtuturo niya... At first, you might find her sarcastic but as you get to know her, you would realize that she's kind, cool and she's really a fun person. Take note: She remembers her students very well. Until now, she still recognizes me. Every time we pass by each other (in FC-AS, way to Math Building), she never fails to wave and smile at me. Nagjojoke si Mam sa class at may topics na master niya talaga. Pero kadalasan, hindi ako makuntento sa discussions, medyo malabo ang pag expound niya. Pero infairness kay mam, sa class ako nakakita ng actual brain. At maiinstill din sayo ang psych concepts [kung masipag ka talaga] thru her papers, exams, etc. Comprehensive, technically. Pero not as enjoyable as the other Psych 101 classes there. Maraming fun activities so you see na malaki ang involvement ng students sa course. Talagang may encouragement siya na mag-participate ang students, at mag-share ng insights tuwing discussions.
